Term 3 Week 6
#magnifysandhurst
It has been a busy fortnight in the P-2 area with lots of wonderful learning happening.
Foundation
Grade Prep children are learning new sound-symbol relationships this week with a focus on digraphs, particularly the digraphs that make the long ‘e’ (/ea/ /ee/ e-e/) sound and the /sh/ digraph. The children are building up their bank of tricky words for reading and spelling. They are enjoying the story, “Click, Clack, Moo” by Doreen Cronin. During the story, they are making predictions and discovering the meaning of the words ‘impatient,’ ‘furious’ and ‘demand.’
Gr 1
Grade One children are learning the /ue/ /ew/ sound. They are enjoying the story book, “Now We are Six,” a book of poetry, and are studying the poems “Forgiven” and “Waiting at the Window.” They are learning the meaning of the word ‘certain’ and finding synonyms for the word.
Gr 2
Grade Two children are learning about plural suffixes (-s, -es, -ies) and rules to correctly apply them to their spelling. They have been loving the story, “The Day the Crayons Came Home” and are going to write a postcard from the perspective of one of the crayons.
Foundation
Following the OCHRE program for mathematics, Grade Prep children are working on various measurement topics, including length, mass and capacity.
Gr 1
The Grade One children are finishing off their learning about patterns. They are learning to skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s and looking for patterns in number. They will be introduced to the topic of sharing and grouping (multiplication and division) later this week.
Gr 2
The Grade Two children are working on the topics of multiplication and division. In this unit of work, children are doubling and halving numbers, skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, and using arrays. They are learning about repeated addition and linking this to multiplication. They will use bar models to represent ‘groups of.’
Gr 3 and 4
The children in Grade 3/4 are finishing off the class novel 'The Iron Man' and how to write an information report. They have been reading and spelling contractions such e.g. didn't, couldn't...
They are continuing work on their joined handwriting with a focus on diagonal and horizontal joins. In Spelling, 3/4s have covered homophones and words containing the suffix -ness eg blindness. We have also worked on how to punctuate direct speech.
For Maths, 3/4s have begun the unit on 2D and 3D Shape. Gr 3/4s have been learning about names of 2D shapes such as hexagons, nonagons, pentagons etc. We also looked at 3D shapes, learned the definition of and counted their edges, faces and vertices. We made base models and worked out how many blocks would be in 2 or 3 layers the same. We are now onto prisms and pyramids. Gr 4s have also been learning about the difference between 2D and 3D shape. We have learned about 3D shape nets and have moved on to lines of symmetry.
Gr 5 and 6
In 5/6 this week, we are finishing off our class novel - 'Thomas Appleby - Convict Boy' by Jackie French. We have really enjoyed reading this book, and learning about life in the 1800's, how convicts made the journey to Australia and what life was like when they arrived. Next week, we will move onto our new book - "The Grandest Bookshop in the World" by Amelia Mellor.
During writing time, we are finishing off our information reports about 'Convict Settlement in Australia'. We have learnt how to take notes and write paragraphs including topic sentences, supporting details and concluding sentences.
In Maths, we are into our second week of 'Angles'. We have been focusing on measuring angles using a protractor and finding the values of unknown angles. Next week, we will move onto Decimals.
