Senior School News

Year 5

Maths

In Maths, students have jumped into learning about decimals, focusing on tenths, hundredths, and thousandths, and how to represent these values on a decimal chart. They have also begun exploring the value of decimals—for example, understanding that 12 tenths has the same value as 1.2, and that 90 hundredths is the same value as 9 tenths.

Literacy

In Literacy, students are half way through reading Dirarrn. We have been focussing on action verbs and adding appositives to our sentences. Some example of students appositives are;

  •  Jandamarra, a Bunuba warrior who resisted European settlement in the Kimberley, became a symbol of strength and resistance for his people.
  • Jandamarra, a skilled tracker and sharpshooter, used his knowledge of the land to evade police for years.
  • Jandamarra, an Aboriginal leader remembered for his courage, continues to be honoured in stories and history today.

Students have enjoyed learning about Jandamarra’s life and are currently working on a factual recount of his life journey.

BOOK WEEK

The 5/6s have participated in fun Book Week activities, including reading picture story books such as My Wobbly Bike, Afloat, Truck Cat, and We Live in a Bus. Students also completed arts, crafts, and writing activities based on these books.

My Wobbly Bike Short Story

When I first tried riding my bike, it didn’t go the way I expected…

I put my helmet on and tied my shoelace up, and there I was, riding my bike casually on my way to the glorious park that was covered in lush green grass, and as you stepped on it, it felt like a warm fuzzy carpet. I was so anxious to get there, but on the way there I made one of my sharpest turns ever, but I didn't stop until I reached the park. Then, on the way back, I was cut off by my sister on her bitty, witty, crusty, musty, dusty scooter. She balled out laughing and feeling sorry at the exact same time. So, I hoped that my bike would get up and make a rigid and impenetrable jump. I enjoyed my time at the park, except for when I fell off my bike. I got home and put my shoes away, took my helmet off, and positioned my bike to look lovely.

Topic- Our Blue Planet

We have completed our journey through space and are now turning our focus to extreme weather and its impact on the Earth’s surface. In our first lesson, students explored erosion and how it can change landforms over time. They investigated coastlines, rivers, and deserts, observing how wind and water gradually shape the land.

In Week 7, the Year 5 and 6 students will be heading to IMAX to further explore the forces of extreme weather.

Buddies

We had a wonderful Book Week buddy activity, planned and led by our Year 5 students. Each student was given a picture storybook and tasked with designing an activity for their Prep buddy. Our Year 5s showed outstanding leadership and creativity, organising activities such as arts and crafts, word searches, mazes, physical games, and more. The Preps had an amazing afternoon with their buddies!

Year 6

Maths

Students have begun exploring measurement, converting between common metric units of length, mass, and capacity. They are also learning to use decimals to represent these measurements in real life problem solving situations.

Literacy

Our students have been exploring earthquakes and the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale to understand how earthquakes are measured and their impact on people and the environment. Using information from fluency texts and their own independent research, they have planned and written detailed information reports about earthquakes.

Through this work, students have developed a deeper understanding of seismic activity, how it is recorded, and the ways communities prepare for and respond to natural events.

 Hoop Time

What an amazing achievement by all of our Grade 5 and 6 students when they competed at Hoop Time last Friday!

It was fantastic to hear about the sportsmanship and positive attitude that Sacred Heart students showed. We are very proud to see how wonderfully our students represent themselves in the community.

Dendy Athletics

Well done to our year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students competing at Dendy athletics.
