I am delighted to be taking on the Acting Assistant Principal role for Teaching and Learning and Senior School. I have been in the Senior Sub School Leader role since 2020 and am well acquainted with many families at the College, and hope to strengthen those connections whilst in this role.
On Friday 15 August, Lalor Secondary College hosted the Local Parliamentary Convention at Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre. There were five other schools in attendance, including The Lakes South Morang, St Monica’s College, Mernda Central College, Mill Park Secondary College and Lalor North Secondary College. Keynote speaker Andrea Carson, Professor of Political Communication at La Trobe University, provided context to the students about the proposed ban on social media for those under 16 years of age, using her wealth of knowledge and experience. Congratulations to the student masters of ceremony, Bella Crea (11B) and Celine Tran (11I) who did a fabulous job managing proceedings and facilitating discussions. This was an excellent opportunity for our Year 11 Legal Studies students to flex their research, analysis and advocacy muscles. My sincere thanks go out to the organisers, Sam Kotsopoulos, Sally Ryan, Christine Sakellaris, Zaklina Bicanic and Lana Siryani.
On the same day, Lalor Secondary College hosted the Zonal Chess Tournament. Students from across our competition zone, including students from Preston High School, William Ruthven Secondary College and Keilor Downs College joined our students to challenge themselves to become chess masters. Thank-you to Adam Bavcar and Emma Domm for their ongoing work with the Lalor Secondary College Chess Team.
Learning Conferences occurred on site on Wednesday 13 August and online on Thursday 14 August. Whilst there was great attendance and good utilisation of interpreters to ensure conversations were productive and constructive for all students and families, it was disappointing to note that attendance of senior students and their families was low. Learning Conferences are an excellent opportunity to gain insight into how you are going in the classroom and progressing in your skill development and assessment tasks and are particularly vital at this point in VCE, in the lead up to examination preparation. I encourage students to work closely with their teachers in the coming weeks and make a plan for their study schedules going forward.
Another opportunity for Year 12 students to gain meaningful feedback from teachers is imminent. Trial examinations will take place over the September holidays at the College for all students sitting VCAA examinations. More information, including the schedule will be published via Compass in the coming days.
