Auslan News

Grade Preps have continued practising their fingerspelling using the Auslan alphabet A-Z, when signing “My name is… [fingerspell name]” Students have also focused on learning the numbers 0-12. They completed a challenge in a Number Jigsaw that they then signed with a friend.

We have now started our new topic for the remainder of term 4: Clothing

New signs we are learning include: clothes, T-shirt, shirt (collared), shorts, jeans, skirt, dress, scarf, gloves, jumper, coat, rain coat, socks, shoes, and school uniform.

Grades 1-2 students have been learning how to Give Directions using new signs including: left/right, forward/backward, fast/slow, up/down, through, walk/run, jump, wait, stop/go, and turn around.

Grade 1-2 students have been using these signs to direct their partner around a Treasure Island Pirate Map and around obstacles in outside space. It has been lots of fun!

Grade 1-2s have been introduced to 6 more Handshapes used in signing: Wish, Gun, Flick, Bad, Key/Soon and Letter C. See if they can show you any of these Handshapes!

Grades 3-4 have begun learning signs for Family: family, mother, father, parents, brother, sister, aunty, uncle, cousin, grandmother, grandfather, grandparents, girl and boy. Students are working on a handprint craft activity to introduce their family members.

Grades 5-6 students have started recording their simple Auslan conversations based on topics we have been learning throughout the year!! It has been exciting to see some students complete this task this week! I am very proud of the grade 5-6s demonstrating their knowledge of the Auslan language in this task. To see them applying the signs they know and using their fingerspelling skills to communicate with a partner completely in Auslan is awesome!! I am looking forward to seeing all students bring this task to completion by recording their conversation in the coming week!!
