Around the College

Guest speaker – Mr. Tully Smith, CEO of Australia India Chamber of Commerce (AICC) - Mr. David Robinson

It was a privilege to host a distinguished guest at Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College last week — Mr. Tully Smith, the esteemed CEO of the Australia India Chamber of Commerce (AICC). Mr. Smith grew up in regional Australia and built a career in strategic communications, corporate affairs, and strategy. Success as a strategist has seen Mr. Smith twice included in the Ipsos Global Reputation Council, considered the definitive list of the world’s most influential communicators. With only around 100 people included globally each year, Mr. Smith is one of only a small number of Australians to make the list. Prior to his position at the AICC, Mr. Smith has served as the General Manager of the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) in Australia, Corporate Affairs Manager at Telstra, and Head of Public Affairs at Parks Victoria.

The room hummed with intellectual intrigue as Mr. Smith delved into nuanced discussions on bilateral trade, regional geopolitics, and the myriad opportunities stemming from our collaboration with India. Students from Year 10 Money and Markets, Year 11 Business Management, and Year 11 Economics were thoroughly engaged by the erudite discourse, igniting a profound interest in global affairs and potential career trajectories. The intellectual exchange didn't conclude with the lecture; our students showcased their acumen through insightful questions, underscoring a thorough grasp of the discussed subjects. Next year’s school captain, Jack Donohue, was gracious in thanking Mr. Smith on behalf of the students. We extend our sincere gratitude to the staff at the AICC for their collaboration and support, without which this event would not have been possible. It is through such partnerships that we can provide our students with invaluable opportunities to engage with global perspectives. Thank you to both our school staff and the AICC for contributing to the success of this enriching experience!

Looking forward, Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College is enthusiastic about fortifying its affiliations with esteemed organizations like the AICC. We envision a future where such intellectually stimulating dialogues become a regular facet within our school community. The anticipation of welcoming representatives from AICC and other distinguished organisations invigorates us, promising further opportunities for our students to engage with leaders shaping the global landscape.

Stay tuned for more enlightening experiences as we persist in broadening our horizons at Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College!

Arts and Technology - Mrs. Laura Muranty

Over the last couple of weeks, students have been highly engaged in the Arts and Tech. Term Zero in Theatre Studies came alive as students took part in a Murder Mystery Who Dunnit party. Students were given characters that they had to bring to life and participate in a multi-round of Who Dunnit clues to solve the murder mystery of Elizabeth Killingsworth. With motives, alibies, and misdirections, the activity was layered with twists and turns. Every student improvised and contributed to the activity making it a great introduction to the genre of the play they will be performing next year as part of their assessment.

Students in Year 9 Textiles have been busy learning how to sew on a machine and follow a pattern, making personal modifications along the way. Students were proud of their personalised Tote Bags and eager to learn more.

Students in Years 7 & 8 performed the student-led show of the Musical Six to a packed-out lunchtime audience. The musical tells the story of Henry the 8th’s six wives. Year 8 student Tara Van Den Heuvel directed and choreographed the performance over a six-month period. The group worked tirelessly at lunchtimes and over Zoom to produce an entertaining performance for students and teachers.
