Meeting local writers
This week the Year 10 English class had the opportunity to receive some practical advice on writing narratives, from two local writers Meg Cassidy and Christy Burne.
Both workshops provided our students with practical advice that they could use next year in their General and ATAR courses to bridge the gap from retelling to narrating. By far, my favourite demonstration of this was the moment when Christy Burne placed an aspirin and some water inside a film canister (something that few of our students had ever seen) to demonstrate the importance of building anticipation.
I am absolutely indebted to both Meg and Christy for sparing their time and sharing their experiences. We have already discussed bringing both writers back next year to extend this presentation into a sequence of three workshops, focused exclusively on practical hacks to help students to understand the art of storytelling.
