Year 1
Werribee Park Mansion
On Wednesday morning, the Year Ones visited Werribee Park Mansion as part of our inquiry learning about life in the past.
We travelled by bus for quite a long time, and when we arrived the first thing we did was enjoy our recess. After that, we split into three groups and explored different areas of the mansion and the beautiful gardens.
We visited the farm area where there used to be horses, chickens, and 80,000 sheep. The owners made a lot of money selling wool, and they used that money to build the incredible mansion — some rooms even had real gold on the walls and ceilings!
Next, we went on a tour of the mansion. We saw the very fancy rooms where the owners lived and even got to play in the children’s room with old-fashioned toys. We also visited a games room with real animal skins (and heads still attached!), the kitchen, and the servants’ quarters. We were surprised to learn that a family with two adults and three children had more than 30 servants working for them. The owners’ rooms were grand and fancy, while the servants’ areas were not.
We learnt that the mansion had a servants’ bell system which called the servants when the owners pushed the bell in each room, and that in the past women were not allowed to enter the men’s room, but men were allowed in the ladies’ rooms. There were chambermaids whose job was to empty and clean the chamber pots, which people used instead of toilets.
The children in the family were taught at home by a teacher who lived with them, and they had school six days a week!
We also explored the laundry room, where everyone had a turn using the washboard, ringer, dolly, and even grated soap to wash the clothes. It was hard work, and we are very glad we have washing machines today.
To finish the day, we walked around the lake, explored the grotto, and saw lots and lots of flying foxes before heading back to the bus.
It was a fantastic excursion and we learnt so much about life in the past. We had a great day and lots of fun!
Year 3
Last week the students learnt about angles. They looked for angles in the classroom and school yard. They drew pictures and labelled the right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles that they could find.
Year 4
The Year 4 students thoroughly enjoyed their excursion to AFL MAX!
Year 5
In Year 5 mathematics, the students have been learning to build 3D nets to build robots. These are some of our robots:
Year 6
In Maths, Year 6 are revising their knowledge of area, fractions, percentages and financial mathematics by designing a mini-golf hole and using our knowledge of scale to calculate the cost of building the whole within an allocated budget. Some of the holes have windmills, bridges, loops, towers, sand traps and water hazards. They have managed to stay within budget!
