Social Media Changes

Gallery Image

Earlier in the year, I shared an article about the upcoming changes to Media Laws. Later this year, significant changes will take effect under the eSafety Commissioner’s regulatory guidance. Specifically, the implementation of age restrictions for social media account creation and maintenance. From 10 December 2025, age-restricted social media platforms will be required to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under the age of 16 from creating or keeping an account.

Please find below an excerpt from the eSafety Commissioner website:

The restrictions aim to protect young Australians from pressures and risks that users can be exposed to while logged in to social media accounts. These come from design features that encourage them to spend more time on screens, while also serving up content that can harm their health and wellbeing.

While no formal assessments have been made, the age restrictions are likely to apply to FacebookInstagramSnapchatTikTokX (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, among other platforms.

More generally, age restrictions will apply to social media platforms that meet three specific conditions, unless they are excluded based on criteria set in out in legislative rules made by the Minister for Communications in July 2025.

Whilst the College will continue its education of eSafety through Personal Development lessons, we encourage you to partner with us in implementing these bans at home, for the safety of our students.

Please also refer to the 'Social Media Law Changes' section of this edition for further resources and information.

Class Coordinator Lead 2026

Our sincere thanks to our wonderful class parent co-ordinators for their commitment to their classes this year. They have played a vital role in building a friendly, supportive and positive community in our school and we appreciate their time and effort. We will be seeking class parent volunteers once classes come out in 2026 for the new school year.

In the meantime, we are seeking a volunteer to become the class parent co-ordinator lead in 2026. This person helps to set up the Class WhatsApp groups at the start of the year, helps to orientate the class parent co-ordinators and liaises with the Primary leadership team and marketing team. It is not an onerous task, and a full handover and support is available from the existing CPC lead this term.

If you are interested or have questions about the role, please email Hannah Jenns: hjenns@clayfield.qld.edu.au

Class Allocations 2026

As we plan for the 2026 school year, the class teachers will be organising class placements. Much time and effort will be placed into these decisions, with the teacher’s knowledge of friendships and how their students work best in the classroom. Considerations are also made on new students to the College and student learning needs across the cohort, to support a balanced class in all areas.

We appreciate your trust in our expertise in forming our classes, which are prepared with thorough review and discussion with the Primary Teaching Staff.  Whilst we understand parents may have requests for specific teachers or peer groups, this is not our process and would appreciate your understanding. Classes will be shared with our families in the new year, ahead of the 2026 school year.

If you have any questions or concerns with this, please contact Mrs Fellowes.

Class Christmas Parties

It’s that wonderful time of year again; our Class Christmas Parties are coming up! Each teacher will be in touch soon to share details about what your child’s class will be doing to celebrate, including plans for gifts, Secret Santas, food, and the timing of their party.

When choosing or making gifts, we encourage families to think about the true spirit of Christmas. A heartfelt, handmade gift or card can be especially meaningful and will help make our celebrations even more special.

Andrews Cup Basketball and Gymnastics

Congratulations to the students who competed on Wednesday in the Andrews Cup Basketball and Artistic Gymnastics competitions. All students showed tremendous team spirit and enthusiasm.

Thank you to Miss Lewin for her organisation of both events, particularly the gymnastics where Clayfield College was the host school. An enormous amount of time and effort went into the logistics, and my extended thanks to the Sports Team, led by Ms Hughes, and our Facilities and Maintenance Teams.

Transition Day

Last week our students loved having a couple of lessons transitioning to their new year levels for 2026 and welcoming new friends to our campus. Everyone left chatting excitedly about their experiences and eagerly anticipating the year ahead. It is incredible to think our incoming Prep classes will be the class graduating in 2038!

Reminder for Prep and Pre-Prep Families

The entrance to the Prep and Pre-Prep Centre off Gregory Street near Gate 2 will be temporarily closed from Monday 10 November for a concrete pour scheduled as the next phase of the pathway upgrade project.

While works are in progress, the main entry doors to the Prep and Pre-Prep classrooms will be closed, and all access to the classrooms will be through the playground gates closest to our Palm Grove Playground. The pathway from Gregory Street to OSCH and the Prep and Pre-Prep playground gates will be open as usual.

Thank you in advance for your support and patience in accommodating these changes.

Homework Club

Due to LUX preparations, please be advised that Years 3 to 6 Homework Club will be relocated to Room 56 from Thursday 6 November to Tuesday 18 November.

Room 56 is a Year 6 classroom adjacent to the Amphitheatre.

Year 5 and 6 Public Speaking

On Tuesday we held our Year 5 and Year 6 Public Speaking Competition, a highlight on our Term 4 calendar. Each student on stage had already won their class competition to earn their place in the final, making the standard incredibly impressive.

Our Year 5 finalists recited poetry and captivated the audience with expressive character voices, purposeful pauses, detailed facial expression and confident gestures. Every performance reflected practice, interpretation and theatrical flair.

Year 6 finalists presented persuasive speeches on a wide range of topics including the risks of social media and AI, arguments against a social media ban, the health risks of sugar-free drinks, palm oil concerns, abolishing school uniforms and the benefits of learning a second language.

Each speaker was well researched, intentional and compelling. Our guest judge, Ms Sian Graham, 2IC English in Senior School, was extremely impressed by the strength of their persuasive strategies and speaking techniques.

Congratulations to our place winners:
