Seeds of Learning: Cultivating Fresh Ideas in the Kambala Garden
Kambala's Year 7 Technology students have been busy in the school garden and vegetable patch, cultivating fresh herbs, vegetables and spices, as part of a new unit on developing meal kits that feature organic produce. The girls have taken a hands-on approach, tilling the soil, preparing the beds, and planting seeds to better understand natural ingredients and how they grow. Throughout Term 4, they have been learning about the plant growth cycle, the importance of watering and providing nutrients to support healthy development in preparation for a summer harvest.
Working in close collaboration with Kambala’s gardener and groundsman, Ryan Whiting, students have gained practical insight into sustainable food production and garden care. The project has encouraged teamwork, responsibility, and environmental awareness, connecting classroom learning with real-world applications. The girls have loved the opportunity to get their hands dirty and explore the physical journey of the food we enjoy on our dinner plates each day.

Year 9 Recital
On the 30th of October, the Year 9 Recital was held in the Performance Theatre. Year 9 elective music students performed challenging pieces on a wide variety of instruments, including Emma Bensoussan playing Etude No.1 Opus 25 by Chopin on piano and Madeleine Sleep playing One for Mum by Davidson on saxophone. A particular highlight was the Year 9 Rock Band (Juliet Lincoln-Smith on vocals and guitar, Aimee Zhong on vocals, Esme Haddad on guitar, Alexis Cassidonis on bass guitar, Oni McPhee on drums and Arabella Spence on lead guitar), who performed for the first time ever playing Hotel California by The Eagles.
The recital enabled students to showcase the effort they’ve invested in polishing their pieces and was a great opportunity to practice performing before the Concert Practice Performance Assessments in Week 6. Congratulations to all performers, and thank you to the audience, private music tutors and music department staff for your dedication, hard work and unwavering support. Special thanks to Mr Sagar, who has given feedback, support and accompaniment to every student involved in this event.

Student Leadership Forum
One of the engagement initiatives for Federal Member for Wentworth, Allegra Spender is the Student Leadership Forums. The forum is an opportunity to introduce student leaders to how community involvement plays an important role in Australian politics and invites them to consider how this idea translates to the work that student leaders do within their own school communities.
On Monday 13 November, Giselle Overton and Katherine Lewis, members of the Kambala Senior School Student Representative Committee (SRC) attended this forum on behalf of our school. It was a valuable opportunity for them to consider their own leadership journey, discussing their motivations as leaders, the strengths required and challenges they and other leaders may face. There were lively, thought-provoking discussions amongst the group and the afternoon provided the opportunity for Katherine and Giselle to voice issues being student-led in our community. They were outstanding ambassadors for Kambala.

Anna Funder: WIFEDOM
In Week 4 we welcomed Anna Funder, author of ‘WIFEDOM’, to Kambala as our special guest for the English Extension 2 Major Work Showcase. The night was a wonderful opportunity for students from the past, our 2025, and our new intake of major work students come together and celebrate English Major Works of the past three years.
The event showcased students thoughtfully discussing their process and purpose, highlighting the significance and lasting value of the major work in their learning both at school and beyond. Our students spoke with integrity and clarity, demonstrating not only a deep passion for their projects but also great courage in articulating their creative concepts.
Furthermore, a selection of current and past students engaged in a Q&A hosted by Jessica Allen Waters (2024) with Anna Funder on issues ranging from AI and creativity to the power of storytelling, and her reflections on creative process. Our recent 2025 graduates were also presented with an anthology of their works. The evening ended with a gallery walk through a showcase of student works.
The Extension 2 Major Work requires students to commit to a year-long, tertiary-style project where students are the directors. It is interdisciplinary and offers many forms of communication including, short fiction, essay, poetry, podcast, creative non-fiction, to name a few.
The passions and interests formed in the major work often inform lifelong interests and students’ next steps beyond Kambala and we were delighted to welcome back alumni who are now studying in the field of English to form part of our showcase. It was wonderful to hear of students' tertiary studies in English and related fields, and for our younger students who are just beginning this journey to have the opportunity to share ideas and be inspired by the works of older students.

Leading Boldly
Each year at the end of Term 3, time is set aside to allow Year 11 to focus on the journey they are about to embark upon, their final year of schooling. This time afforded them with the opportunity to focus on personal and collective goals as leaders, to confidently meet and overcome the challenges ahead, as well as enjoy moments of connection in what was their last overnight stay together as a cohort. Strengthening the bonds of old and new friendships and forging fond, new memories.
Day 1 of the Retreat leant into how the group will show up, guide and inspire each other and their peers in the year ahead. Students completed two sessions where they collaborated, listened and documented ideas and passions to assist them to establish their motto and vision for the year ahead. This day is important as it provides students with time to hear each other's opinions, ideas and voices.
The second part of the Year 11 Retreat took place offsite at The Collaroy Centre, this part of the experience allowed time for students to develop new skills and practise and revisit some techniques that they can use to support each other over the next year. The second day of the offsite program provided the cohort with a whole day experience, led by Y-Lead facilitators. This day is always a highlight for students as they pause and reflect on themselves as individual leaders and also their collective leadership as a group.
As the group returned onsite for the final day of the program, they had the opportunity to connect with Head of Academic Life, Mr Knox and Future Pathways Coordinator, Mr Pettit who presented information to support students in the year ahead. As well as time for students to understand more about them and their roles and how they can support students in their Year 12 HSC and IB years.
Congratulations to the Class of 2026 who showed up for each other, supporting the beginning of their journey as peers and friends. We await the launch of the Class of 2026 Motto and look forward to a year of their leadership.

Leadership is Action
Throughout Term 4, the Prefect Team has continued to shine a light on the power of the Kambala community to support others. Over the next few weeks there are two Senior School initiatives the Prefect Team would appreciate your support with:
The Prefect Team, led by Kate Wu, have continued their support of St Nicholas Mission Academy in Ghana by offering Kambala students and families the opportunity to buy Christmas/ Holiday cards. St Nicholas Mission Academy was founded by KOG Anais Menounos and supports local children by providing education. Once again, this year, you can buy Christmas, Birthday and Holiday cards with all designs being created by students currently attending school at St Nic’s or Kambala. All funds raised go towards the Academy.
Card orders can be placed via the website, https://www.stnicma.org/category/cards. It is live and orders will be taken until Midnight on Sunday 23 November.
- The Advocacy Committee, led by Prefects Lara Chersky and Claudia Gerber, are inviting Kambala families to support their Christmas Drive. The aim to provide gifts for families that may be unable to give to their children this Christmas. Each House has been selected to buy presents for an allocated age and gender group (Gurney: 16 -18 year-old girls, Wentworth: 13 -15 year-old girls, Roseby: 16 -18 year-old boys, and Hawthorne: 13 -15 year-old boys). Students have already started bringing in toys and gifts to bring joy to those most in need of our support. Donations can be brought in and left at Senior School Student Services or students can drop these off at the grey room, behind the Alexander Hall.
Thank you to our amazing community for your support.
