Principal's message

Hi Solway PS community,

I hope everyone enjoyed a restful break over the Melbourne Cup holiday period and were able to spend time with family, friends and doing the things that bring you joy. The weather certainly brought its fair share of rain, I trust it didn’t spoil too many plans or outdoor activities.

I would like to thank our school community for your understanding and support last week, with Monday being a normal school day running on a modified program. I know many families took the opportunity to enjoy an extended long weekend, and I appreciate your cooperation in helping the day run smoothly for those students who were at school.

Keeping Monday as a regular school day, rather than a curriculum day, also allowed us to acquit more than 50 hours of Time in Lieu for staff, all at no additional cost to the school. As you may know, we don’t receive any specific Department funding for Time in Lieu, but it’s an important way for us to acknowledge the extra time teachers put in to run events like our camps, discos and other special programs that make Solway such a vibrant place for our students.

On Wednesday, our teachers spent the day hard at work preparing end of semester reports. These reports take a great deal of time, reflection and care as teachers review student progress, growth and achievement across the year. It’s a big task, but an important one, as it helps us communicate with families about each child’s learning journey and next steps.

I want to thank our teachers for the professionalism and dedication they bring to this process. The time they spend thoughtfully assessing and writing about every student is a real reflection of how deeply they care about supporting each student to thrive in our inclusive community.

On behalf of all the staff, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful parent community for organising such a beautiful morning tea and lunch to celebrate World Teachers’ Day. The spread was absolutely incredible, both in quality and quantity, and it truly made our day feel special. It was a lovely reminder of how lucky we are to be part of such a thoughtful and generous community. Thank you again for your kindness, effort, and ongoing support it means a great deal to all of us.

Finally, last week we were thrilled to welcome our 2026 Prep students for their very first transition session. Welcoming our newest learners is always such an exciting time of the year, it’s wonderful to see their curiosity, enthusiasm, and confidence beginning to shine as they start their journey at Solway PS. Our next transition session will be held on Wednesday 13 November at 2:15pm. We look forward to seeing our new Preps again as they continue getting to know their teachers, classmates, and learning spaces.

Thank you for your continued support and lets all strive to be “our best always”.
