Grade 1 & 2

Grade 1/2 have been reading Collecting Colour by Kylie Dunstan. The story follows two friends, Rose and Olive, who live in Arnhem Land and spend a day collecting natural materials used for weaving beautiful pandanus mats. Through the story, students learned about Indigenous culture, connection to Country, and the process of gathering, preparing, and dyeing pandanus leaves. As part of our literacy learning, we explored procedural writing by sequencing the steps involved in making a pandanus mat. From collecting leaves, stripping and drying them, to weaving them into colourful patterns. Inspired by the story, students created their own artworks to represent the vibrant colours of the pandanus mats in the book.
