Year 9 Science Enrichment

Science Enrichment is a unique elective subject offered to Year 9 students who enjoy science and wish to explore areas not typically covered in regular science classes.

The subject covers several interesting units, with topics including forensics, food and differences in life. Each unit of work is based on problem-solving, teamwork, and applying skills that have been practised in lessons. This style of learning lends itself to a lot of hands-on work and exploration, with students saying that they enjoy the depth of discussion and investigation that occurs in lessons.

This year, as part of their Term 4 learning, Mrs Somerton’s class performed several dissections, allowing the students to observe the internal arrangement of organs firsthand, rather than relying on diagrams to learn. As they performed each dissection, they were also able to compare the design and differences between species, and apply the theory covered in previous lessons.

In preparation for performing the dissections, the students learnt dissection skills and how to identify sections and organs. The small class size ensured that everyone received hands-on experience. This hands-on learning style benefits students considering a career in science or medicine.

Another unique aspect of this course is the assessment style, with the classwork contributing 50% of their grade. Students learn to record their work in a portfolio on OneNote, with students reporting that they like this style of assessment.
