JLC Newsletter- Year 1- Week 6, Term 4
In Mathematics, students have been exploring the topic of shape, with a focus on naming, identifying, and describing different two-dimensional shapes. They have been developing their understanding of important mathematical vocabulary, including polygons and quadrilaterals. To make learning more engaging, students have enjoyed using geoboards to create and experiment with a variety of shapes.
In Literacy, students have been learning new sounds, focusing on the spelling patterns _tch and _ch that make the /ch/ sound. They have also been exploring how adding the prefix ‘un’ to the beginning of a word changes its meaning to the opposite, such as tie/untie. In addition, students have been practising reading and spelling their new tricky words: laugh, people, every, walk, talk, and know. To celebrate finishing our storybook Ralfy Rabbit the Book Burglar, students enjoyed creating their own rabbit crafts, which you can see in the photos below.
During Inquiry, students have been exploring the science of forces, learning about how different objects can be pushed and pulled. They discussed how changing the strength of a force, whether a strong or weak push or pull, can affect how far an object moves. To apply their learning, students designed and built their own mini golf or marble run courses, where they investigated how pushes and pulls can change the direction and movement of objects. They also observed and described how objects move in different directions when they collide.
Week 7 and 8 Reminders:
- Monday 17th November: JLC Water Familiarisation Program
Hello from the Year 2 Team!
What a busy few weeks it has been in Y 2—and right across our school community!
Last week we completed our unit on George’s Marvellous Medicine, a text the students absolutely loved. We then turned our attention to another novel: The 27th Annual African Hippopotamus Race. It’s been wonderful to see the children so engaged with this longer and more challenging text. They are confidently applying their reading skills, discussing characters and events, and showing real enthusiasm for learning together.
We’ve also dived into our new maths unit on data. The students have been practising how to read and analyse a variety of data displays — and then using that understanding to make their own displays based on “open questions”.
They’ve been:
- posing questions they’re curious about,
- collecting data (for example via tallies or surveys),
- organising it into tables or charts, and
- interpreting what the data is showing them.
We have also been extremely busy and are now exhausted with swimming this week. The students have been amazing, the way they have listened to their swimming teacher and being organised. We have noticed lots of progress in their swimming over the week. Only one session to go next Monday.
With only four and a half weeks of the year to go, we are also very busy starting to complete assessments across all areas of learning to help us as we write your child's reports.
Have a great weekend everyone, Mrs Nye, Mrs Hyde & Mrs Dovey
