Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: We are aiming to learn all our multiplication facts up to x12 by the end of the year. If your child can recall all of them, they can switch over to their division facts.
Ideas to practice: You may like to create flash cards or skip count aloud with your child to help support their learning with this.
Inquiry: Students are now working towards ensuring their groups are ready to trade/sell their business product in week 6.
Some groups may need to meet up in the weekend to prepare items for Monday. Thank you for your support with this.
Please let the teachers know if your child needs support in class.
Christmas Concert - Friday 28th November
Our Christmas concert is fast approaching. For this amazing event, we ask the following;
Children are dropped to the classroom at 6:45pm
Children are dressed in green top/dress and green skirt or plain shorts/pants
Year 6 Graduation: Wednesday 26th November 2025.
We have sent home more information about our Graduation Dinner at Dimples, Tea Tree Gully Golf Course, on Wednesday, November 26th. This special evening is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and honour our Year 6 students with their families. Your child should have brought home an invitation and further details about the event this week. Please contact your teacher if you have not received this information.
Business Unit:
Some groups are looking to purchase items online for their business projects.
Please ensure careful attention is given to ordering from Australian-based suppliers so that products arrive on time to sell Monday the 17th of November. Some websites like Temu cannot guarantee delivery within the required timeframe.
We are unable to manage or place orders on behalf of the groups.
If you feel confident supporting students with this process, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
All purchases will be reimbursed by each business group who have received $80 from the school.
Please check with your child to ensure they are ready to trade/sell on Monday.
Current and Upcoming Learning
Reader’s Workshop: Students will be using Reader’s Workshop as an opportunity to read different texts that will inform their understanding of advertising techniques and we will also have time to enjoy free choice reading, to continue to foster their love of reading.
Writer’s Workshop:
Students have begun writing a business journal to reflect on their progress, noting what is going well, any changes made to their original idea, how effectively they are collaborating, and the challenges they face. The focus will be on using clear sentence structures, well-organised paragraphs, and a variety of sentence types. Students will also create jingles to promote their business.
Mathematics: Students will begin recording their business expenses in a ledger this week. This skill will be explicitly taught and practised in class to ensure they have a solid understanding before trading begins in Week 6. We will also continue revisiting our statistics and data knowledge to prepare students for collecting and graphing their sales data. This will help them analyse their performance and identify ways to improve during the second week of trading.
Inquiry: We are well underway into our inquiry into How ‘Business uses structure to make decisions’. We are running this alongside the inquiry: Media influences the way we think and view the world.
This is a busy and exciting time for our Year 5/6 students, and they may benefit from some debriefing conversations at home. If you have any concerns or questions about their business project, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
