Year 5/6 Business Unit – money for items in Week 6

Each day next week, the Year 5/6 students will be selling food/drink/toy items at lunch and after school. The items range from $1 to $4.

Some examples are nuggets and chips, milkshakes, ice blocks. We ask that you talk to your child about making wise choices e.g. they wouldn’t purchase all 3 of these items on one day.

We encourage small amounts of money rather than large notes. If you allow your child to bring money, it must be in a plastic bag/wallet/purse with their name clearly on it and we will secure it in the classroom until needed.

The purpose of this unit is so the Year 5/6 students have an opportunity to learn the aspects involved in running a business, including advertising, purchasing goods, selling goods and making a profit. Money raised will go towards the charity Australian Lutheran World Service.

Christmas Concert - Friday 28th November

Mrs Ali and Mrs Hall have sent this message:

Our Christmas concert is fast approaching and we are looking forward to this amazing event. We ask the following:

Children are dropped to the classroom at 6:45pm

Year 1/2 students are dressed in yellow top/dress and yellow skirt or plain shorts/pants.

Junior Choir children will receive a note with information shortly.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Christmas Cards

Each year some students like to write Christmas cards for their classmates. The day to pass these out will be Tuesday 9th December, which is the School Fun Day, organised by the P&F. Students can bring them in earlier if they prefer, in a labelled bag and we can keep them here ready for the Fun Day.

Swimming Week Tuesday 2nd – Friday 5th December.

A paper permission note will come home in the next few weeks.

Home Inquiry

Did you know that GGLPS has been here for 38 years? The large mural in the courtyard shows what was thought to be here before the school.

What has changed in the suburb you live in? Can you remember some changes that have happened? Can you find out about any other changes that have happened in the time you have lived there and before you were born?

Writer’s and Reader’s Workshops: Persuasive Writing

We will read the Year 5/6 posters for their business unit and identify the persuasive features. We will also look at book recommendations from other children and write some of our own. Year 2 students will also practise writing a persuasive text.

Mathematics:

Over the next couple of weeks we will revisit the concepts of capacity (how much something holds) and mass (which items have a greater mass/less mass). We always talk about estimating first.

When you’re shopping, your child might estimate the mass of a bag of fruit and then place it on the scales to find the ‘actual’ mass. They could also look on the front of containers to see how much liquid they hold e.g. orange juice.

Unit of Inquiry: Where we are in place and time

Central idea: Communities and places have changed over time.

Lines of inquiry:

  • Past and Present

  • How communities/places have changed over time

  • How technology has change over time

We continue our inquiry into what has changed over time e.g. technology, transport, food, communication, and compare now to the time depicted in the school mural.

Christian Studies

Christianity in the World: Religious beliefs and ideas shape people’s thinking and actions.

Linking in with Christmas, students inquire into how the birth of a baby is celebrated in different religions. We will then have some Christmas crafts for students to do.

Other Reminders

Each day students need to bring the following. Please label everything.

  • hats – these remain in the classroom for the term.

  • sunscreen is generally not applied at school during Terms 2 and 3.

  • Take Home Bags, which are also for Library borrowing.

  • a water bottle

  • a fruit snack

  • recess

  • lunch

Items from home/Canteen money

Students do not bring items from home unless this has been a discussion between parents and teachers.

Students may bring one named ball to play with at break times, however, please ensure it is not a special item in case of loss or damage.

We have also reminded students that the money they have for the canteen is for their own or sibling purchases and not to buy food for their friends.

Shoelaces

Please make sure your child can do up laces themselves if they have shoes with laces. Another option is shoes with Velcro until they learn this skill.

Bag Tags

It is useful for students to have a bag tag to identify their bag. Please only put one bag tag on and make sure it is not a special one that will be missed if it is lost as we are not able to monitor this.

Lunch Boxes

Please pack a substantial lunch rather than lots of recess snacks and put an ice pack in on hot days as the lunches remain in school bags outside. We also ask that you send in ‘nude food’ which does not include wrappers.

Library Borrowing

Both classes visit the Library on Tuesdays to borrow 2 books for 2 weeks.

Take Home books

Each week students take home 2-3 interest books to read at home. A letter has been sent home explaining the process. During the week, we listen to children who are reading decodable books and change these over.

Toddle

We post important information reminders, student learning, photos/videos and assessments on this platform.  Please contact the office if you are not connected.

Volunteers

During the year we have excursions, a Year 1 Sleepover and a Year 2 Camp.

If you are interested in volunteering, there a few things you must have up to date to be able to come along or to help in the classroom. Please do not volunteer unless you have these already. Contact the office if you have any questions.
