From the Head of Calrossy Middle School (Yrs 7 - 9)
Tomorrow, Thursday 12th September, Calrossy will host a special R U OK? Day event for students in Years 7 to 10. This day, recognised nationwide, is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and encouraging people to ask a simple yet impactful question: "Are you okay?" By initiating meaningful conversations, the aim is to provide support to those who may be struggling with life's challenges.
This year, Calrossy is honoured to welcome guest speaker Sam Bailey. Sam is an inspiring figure known for his remarkable resilience and determination. A successful farmer, pilot, and author, Sam's story is extraordinary. After a life-changing accident that left him a quadriplegic, he has defied the odds and accomplished goals that many thought were impossible. His journey of overcoming adversity, staying positive, and thriving in the face of challenges makes him the perfect advocate for R U OK? Day.
Sam's talk will encourage students to reflect on the importance of checking in with their friends, family, and themselves. He will share his experiences of personal growth and resilience, showing that even in tough times, it’s okay to ask for help. His story serves as a reminder that no matter how difficult life may seem, support is always available, and open conversations can make a significant difference.
R U OK? Day at Calrossy will also include stalls from local support agencies, such as Headspace and Centrecare to talk with students who may be seeking some help regarding their wellbeing. As a school, we hope to empower students with the tools they need to recognise when someone might need help and to confidently start conversations that could save a life
