SSV Year 7 Boys Soccer State Championships

On Friday 6th September BHS took our Year 7 Boys Soccer team to the SSV Year 7 Boys State Championships at the Darebin International Sport Centre in Melbourne. This championship brings together the 8 best SSV teams to decide the SSV State Championships. The BHS team played the first match of the game resulting in the team needing to leave Ballarat at 6:30am!

BHS were drawn into Pool A alongside Albert Park Secondary College, Catherine McAuley College and Brunswick Secondary College. Notre Dame College, Rowville Secondary College, Lavalla Catholic College and Maribyrnong College made up Pool B.

It was certainly a tough day out for the team, some would say character building. The first game against Catherine McAuley College resulted in a 0 goals to 7 goals loss, followed by 0 goals to 5 goals loss against Brunswick Secondary College. In the last match the team finally got a score on the board when Jasper Colligan put one passed the keeper, unfortunately Albert Park Secondary College scored 8 goals of their own.  The team finished with 0-3 record and missed out on an opportunity in the Grand Final (Albert Park Secondary College declared the winners). The team had finished in 7th/8th place for the whole competition.

SSV Greater Western Region Year 8 Boys Volleyball

On Tuesday 10th September BHS took our Year 8 Boys Volleyball team to the SSV Greater Western Region Year 8 Volleyball competition at Holy Trinity Lutheran College, Horsham.

It was certainly a long way to drive for the competition, more so when we found out the team only had one match against the host school Holy Trinity Lutheran College! The winning team would go on to represent the Greater Western Region at the SSV State Championships.

The competition was best of 3 sets (first team to win 2 sets). In the first set the team went down 21pts to 15pts but rallied back to take the second set 21pts to 16pts. It all came down to the final set where the team narrowly missed out on winning 13pts to 15pts. Holy Trinity Lutheran College had won the competition leaving Ballarat High School in the runner up position.

Year 8 Volleyball coach Patrick Lynch said all sets of the match were very close and the boys were extremely unlucky not to take out the final set and the overall win.

SSV Senior Girls Soccer State Championships

On Tuesday 10th September BHS took our Senior Girls Soccer team to the SSV Senior Girls State Championships at the Darebin International Sport Centre in Melbourne.

This championship brings together the 8 best SSV teams to decide the SSV State Championships. Another 6.30am start occured as our BHS team played the first match

BHS were drawn into Pool A alongside Elisabeth Murdoch College, Girton Grammar School and Northcote High School. Princes Hill Secondary College, Balwyn High School, Marist-Sion College Warragul, Williamstown High School made up Pool B.

The first game against Elisabeth Murdoch College resulted in a 1 goal draw, followed by 0 goals to 2 goal loss against Girton Grammar School (the eventual winners) and finally a 1 goal to 5 goals loss against Northcote High School.

The team finished with 0-2-1 record and missed out on an opportunity in the Grand Final. The team had finished in 7th place for the whole competition. These were fantastic results considering many students were unavailable due to illness, injury and the Specialist Sport Camp on the Gold Coast.

SSV Intermediate Boys Soccer State Championships

On Thursday 12th September BHS took our Intermediate Boys Soccer team to the SSV Intermediate Boys State Championships at the Darebin International Sport Centre in Melbourne. This championship brings together the 8 best SSV teams to decide the SSV State Championships. Again BHS team played the first match of the game resulting in yet another 6:30am start! We are starting to think that the SSV State Coordinator doesn’t like us!

BHS were drawn into Pool A alongside Parkdale Secondary College, Castlemaine Secondary College and Mount Ridley College. Catholic College Wodonga, Rowville Secondary College, Lavalla Catholic College and Maribyrnong College made up Pool B.

The first game against Mount Ridley College resulted in 0 goals to 1 goal loss, followed by 0 goals to 7 goal loss against a very strong Castlemaine Secondary College team and finally a 0 goal to 4 goals loss against Parkdale Secondary College. SSV Eureka Year 7 & 8 Basketball

On Friday 13th September BHS entered 4 teams into the SSV Eureka Year 7 & 8 Basketball competition at the Selkirk Stadium, Ballarat

The Year 8 Boys competition had 7 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Beaufort Secondary College (57pts to 5pts), Phoenix Secondary College (15pts to 11pts) and Mount Clear College (29pts to 13pts). 3 wins secured the team a position in the Semi Final against Woodmans Hill Secondary College (27pts to 11pts) which ended up being a straightforward win and thus progressed to the Grand Final, a rematch with Phoenix Secondary College. The team pushed out to a big lead which Phoenix Secondary College just couldn’t bridge with BHS going onto win the match 32pts to 17pts.

The Year 8 Girls had a round robin competition against 6 other schools. Mount Clear College (29pts to 6pts), Woodmans Hill Secondary College (39pts to 0pts), Phoenix Secondary College (31pts to 9pts), Mount Rowan Secondary College (26pts to 4pts) and Beaufort Secondary College (43pts to 8pts). The team put on a strong performance against all schools to go undefeated and secured the overall win.

The Year 7 Boys competition had 7 teams broken up into two pools. BHS played against Mount Clear College (21pts to 18pts) and Phoenix Secondary College (27pts to 25pts). 2 extremely close matches secured the team a position in the Semi Final against Woodmans Hill Secondary College (29pts to 22pts) with the win allowing them to progress to the Grand Final. Mount Clear College won the other semi-final to make up the second position in the final.

In the Grand Final match, the game went point for point until a late surge from the BHS team pushed the lead out to win by 7 points winning the match 38pts to 31pts.

Finally, the Year 7 Girls had a round robin competition against 5 other schools. Phoenix Secondary College (18pts to 4pts), Mount Clear College (8pts to 7pts), Beaufort Secondary College (24pts to 5pts) and Mount Rowan Secondary College (23pts to 2pts). The team had a very close call with Mount Clear College but were untroubled in their other games to go undefeated for the competition. The school also had 11 students umpire at the event which was a fantastic opportunity for our students to get involved in the SSV competition other than being a competing student.

All 4 teams will now progress to the SSV Greater Western Region Senior & Intermediate Basketball competition on Thursday 7th November at the Selkirk Stadium, Ballarat.

SSV State Year 7 Boys Badminton Championships

On Tuesday 17th September the BHS Year 7 Boys Badminton team headed to Melbourne for the SSV State Year 7 Boys Badminton Championships at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre (MSAC). The team got away early with students and head coaches Jace Murray and Patrick Lynch starting the drive at 7:15am!

BHS drew Pool A alongside Bendigo South East College (0 sets to 6 sets), Keysborough Banksia Secondary College (0 set to 6 sets) and Reservoir High School (0 set to 6 sets). East Doncaster Secondary College, Maribyrnong College, Grace Christian College and Foster Secondary College made up Pool A.

It was a tough day for the team but all involved had a great experience at their first SSV State Championships. Rumours even surfaced that a bet between Mr Lynch and players for a free  McDonalds shout on the way was wagered if any player won a set against their opponent, lucky for Mr Lynch he didn’t need to pay out.

Without securing a win, the team couldn’t qualify for finals. The team had finished 7th/8th in the State! The whole team was looking forward to playing badminton for the school again in 2025.

Students involved: Jay Kanthiya, Sam Murray, Kyle Pelicano, Cooper Wallis

Coaches: Patrick Lynch & Jace Murray (Year 12)
