Year 9 STEM

The Year 9 STEM classes have been busy reaching for the stars – quite literally! This term, our students embarked on an exciting project to design and construct models of interplanetary colonies using craft materials. Their mission? To explore what human settlement on other planets or moons would require to thrive in the harsh conditions of outer space.

In their creative and hands-on project, students tackled a range of challenges, from empathising with the colonists to sketching and building their prototype ideas. Their models incorporated features such as oxygen generators, water recycling systems and even miniature greenhouses to grow food and house animals. Each colony was designed with a focus on surviving the extreme temperatures and radiation levels found on other celestial bodies.

Not only did the project spark enthusiasm and creativity, but it also provided a deep dive into the science of space exploration. Students researched the environmental conditions of different planets and moons, considering factors such as gravity, atmospheric composition, and available resources.

This hands-on experience allowed students to apply their knowledge of science, engineering and human-centred design thinking and to work collaboratively to achieve their desired outcomes meeting the design brief – human colonisation on a different planet or moon!
