Maths Olympiad Superstars

Maths Olympiad Success!

The APSMO (Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads) is a prestigious mathematics competition designed to challenge and extend high-achieving students in Years 5 and 6 across Australia, New Zealand and internationally. Participants tackle a series of 4 problem-solving contests that require creative thinking, persistence, and the ability to apply mathematical knowledge in new and complex ways.

Throughout Terms 1–3, 30 selected students from Years 5 and 6 worked incredibly hard to refine their skills, build their mathematical reasoning, and approach challenging, multi-step problems with confidence and determination. It was an absolute privilege to work with the students and ‘nerd-out’ with them each week during our practice sessions. Listening to their initial frustration when they couldn’t solve a problem straight away transform into pure excitement when the “Maths started Mathsing” is something that makes any teacher’s heart happy. The students even managed to teach me a thing or two along the way! It was truly a celebration of the importance and joy of Numeracy.

Now for the exciting part… (you may want to sit down when reading this!) It is with immense pride that I share this year’s incredible results: Ringwood North Primary School’s 2025 Maths Olympiad Team finished equal sixth overall with a total score of 194. For context, over 1,700 teams from government, Catholic and independent schools were entered into this year’s competition. If that’s not impressive enough, I am thrilled to announce that our school was the highest scoring Victorian school in this year’s competition!!!

I’m sure I speak for the entire school community when I say we are so proud of the dedication and effort shown by every team member, as well as the classroom teachers who have supported, encouraged, and challenged these students throughout their primary school journey. Some of our Year 6 competitors have been part of the Maths Olympiad program since Grade 4, and it has been inspiring to see their growth and confidence soar over the past three years.

While it was a true team effort, I would like to acknowledge the following students for their individual achievements across the four contests:
