Glen Pearsall

Caitlan, Steve, and I had the opportunity to attend Glen Pearsall's seminar last week. He is known for his work on classroom management, effective teaching practice, and teacher wellbeing. He specialises in areas such as positive behaviour strategies, feedback and questioning, differentiation, coaching, and leadership. Glen has written several influential education books and works closely with schools to help teachers create productive, student centred learning environments.

Glen explored a range of strategies for creating a positive and productive learning environment for both students and teachers, featuring highly effective, easy to implement techniques and practical steps that encourage young people to take greater responsibility for their own behaviour. Glen emphasised the importance of using the lowest level of intervention possible to address off task behaviours and redirect students’ focus to what matters most, their learning.

Glen Pearsall is scheduled to visit OLA in 2026 to deliver a seminar for all staff members.

What I Can Control and What I Can’t

When life feels overwhelming, it can be easy to feel stuck in a cycle of stress, worried, and overwhelmed. But there are things you can do to cope and find some calm. We all need to be reminded that there are things that are in our control and also out of our control.

5 effective things you can do if you’re feeling stressed:

  • Take deep breaths or try mindfulness.Practice slow, deep breathing — in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 4, and out through your mouth for 4. This calms your nervous system.
  • Move your body.Go for a walk, stretch, or do a short workout. Physical activity releases endorphins that help reduce stress.
  • Take a short break.Step away from what’s stressing you out. Even 5–10 minutes doing something you enjoy; listening to music, drawing, or having tea can help you reset.
  • Talk to someone you trust.Sharing your thoughts with a friend, family member, or counselor can help you feel supported and gain perspective.
  • Write it down.Journaling or jotting down what’s bothering you can help organize your thoughts and make problems feel more manageable.
