From fairy tale to fright: Year 9 explores the power of genre

Year 9 English students have been engaged in a study of Fear, examining texts that aim to evoke fear in an audience as a way of engaging us. Classes have been exploring the way that texts can create a strong emotional response, and the different tools that composers use to achieve this.

In a recent creative English task, our Year 9 students were challenged to design a film poster reimagining a well-known children’s story in a completely different genre - this time, as a horror film. This engaging task encouraged students to apply their critical thinking skills and imagination as they transformed familiar tales into exciting new narratives. They practised manipulating design choices such as colour, font, and imagery to radically change the way that an audience responds to a text. By blending their understanding of various genres and synthesising different text types, students demonstrated impressive creativity and analytical skills. The project not only deepened their appreciation for storytelling but also highlighted their ability to innovate and think critically about literature. We look forward to seeing more creative projects like this in the future!
