Claire Parsons 3A, Sarah Peters and Jess Steel 3B, Jenny Dare 3C

Welcome to Level 3, Term 4, 2025!

Market Day Thursday 23rd October: All students may wear casual clothes for a gold coin donation and bring up to $20 to spend at the market.

Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4, 2025 saw the Level 3 students return to school eager to resume their learning and reconnect with their friends. The Level 3 teachers have been impressed with how well all of the students have settled back into school ready for a rewarding Term 4.

Term 4 will be a reasonably busy term due to Market Day (week 3), formal assessment (commencing week 5) and various other end of year activities such as Level excursions, transition to the next year level as well as other activities.

Literacy

In Literacy we are continuing to learn about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. We are also continuing to learn about Homophones and have learnt the difference between ‘scene’ and ‘seen’ as well as practising other homophones such as there/ their/ they’re and by/buy/ bye and weather/ whether amongst others.

We are also learning about the spelling rule called ‘211’. This spelling rule is applied to words that have two syllables and a vowel suffix is added to change the meaning and spelling of the word. For example, the word ‘forbid’ has an emphasis on the second syllable, therefore when adding the vowel suffix ‘ing’, the letter ‘d’ is doubled to become ‘forbidding’.

When the emphasis is placed on the first syllable of a word which has two syllables, and you add a vowel suffix, the last consonant letter is NOT doubled. For example, the word ‘offer’ becomes ‘offering’ when adding the vowel suffix ‘ing’.

We are also revising Persuasive Texts and spending a considerable amount of time exploring the specific language being used in Persuasive Writing. The Level 3 students are studying a book called “The President of the Jungle” which is about four individual animals persuading others to become the President. So far, the students have really enjoyed the different types of persuasive language being used in the book.

Maths

In Maths, we are revising vertical addition and subtraction with renaming. The students have really enjoyed this maths and applying different equations to specific problems.

We are also learning about Multiplicative Thinking. Multiplicative Thinking is the ability to understand and work with multiplication and division flexibly across various numbers and problem types. It involves using this understanding to solve problems such as worded maths problems beyond repeated addition. For the students to adequately apply multiplicative thinking, their knowledge of times tables is required. At the end of Level 3, most students should have a broad understanding of the 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10 times tables.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the Level 3 students are learning about Democracy and how democracy works in Australia. The students are learning about the following:

  • Why are rules necessary?
  • What are the main differences between a Rule and a Law?
  • What makes a rule fair?
  • What are the key features and beliefs of democracy?
  • How did certain people and events shape Australian democracy?
  • How does democracy differ from other forms of government?

GEM Chat - In the classroom, we have been discussing Rights and Responsibilities as well as Gender Stereotypes.
