The Last Bear
There are no polar bears left on Bear Island. At least, that’s what April’s father tells her when his scientific research takes them to this remote Arctic outpost for six months. But one endless summer night, April meets one. He is starving, lonely and a long way from home. Determined to save him, April begins the most important journey of her life …
This moving story will win the hearts of children the world over and show them that no one is too young or insignificant to make a difference. The Last Bear is a celebration of the love between a child and an animal, a battle cry for our world and an irresistible adventure with a heart as big as a bear’s.


The Last Bear is our new and last mentor text for the year. Students will be focusing on persuasive writing throughout this learning block and expanding their vocab. Words like unkempt and dubiously have been explored recently. Students will also be answering in-depth questioning from the book to expand their comprehension skills and thinking.
Big Idea 12-13 - RELATIONS & FUNCTIONS: Mathematical rules (relations) can be used to assign members of one set to members of another set. A special rule (function) assigns each member of one set to a unique member of the other set.
EQUATIONS & INEQUALITIES: Rules of arithmetic and algebra can be used together with notions of equivalence to transform equations and inequalities so solutions can be found.
Students have interrupted maps and data that relates to frequencies and ranges. In our Algebra, exploring the basic algorithms of fact families, to finding unknown variables and variable quintinites. Furthering our students into Year 7 content, students are leaning new concepts and vocab, such as mean, medium and mode, along with Stem and Leaf plots.
Bizarre Bazaar - Thinking creatively assists us when we are planning, designing and constructing.
Students will gain a real-life understanding of the design and production process and the different resources and sales tactics used to create and market products. They will brainstorm an idea for a product and conduct market research to refine it. Students will work in groups to prototype and produce their product using craft and recyclable materials. Their products will be sold at a school community market called 'Bizarre Bazaar,' and proceeds from the market will be directed to a charity selected by the class.
This term students will be learning about designing, production and marking of a product that they will make and then sell at our end of term Bizarre Bazaar Market.
Over the past 2 weeks, students have Learnt about 'Striving for Accuracy and Precision' by reflecting on how we use this habit in the classroom. Also learning about Natural, Human and Capital resources that companies use to make things eco friendly, create jobs and turn a profit, all which is needed when it comes to our end of year expo!










Bizarre Bazaar Market - Week 11, Wednesday 17th December. Time TBA
Our camp is not far away. In week 6, we will be heading to Lorne for 3 days. The camp includes LiveWire high ropes, surfing, fishing, beach activities and hiking. If your child is having any concerns about the camp, or being away from home, please contact either Mr Ward or Miss Stephan so we can help support! We would love to see everyone attend and have the best time!
Throughout this term, 5/6A and 5/6B will be in battle each week to see which class will reign as champions of our Class Challenge. This it to promote cooperation, team work, resilience, kindness and how to problem solve as a group. We will also focus on showing humility and how we conduct ourselves not matter the result.
Week 2- Uno
Result - 5/6B!
From forty two players to eventually one winner. Games were a process of elimination. First round of 8 players, saw the top 3 go to the next stage. 6 players, only 2 went through. Final was our top 6 with Henry G taking out the win!










Week 3- Soccer

In a typical soccer shoot out, 5/6A chalked up their first win of the challenges. Luka striking in the first half to put the only score on the board. The sportsmanship was outstanding to see from everyone. All students giving a "foreign game" to us out at Beaufort a red hot crack!
