Grade 6 News

Our newsletter is brought to you by the Grade 6 Public Relations leaders: Bella, Jack, and Charlie.

Important Reminders

  • Please return camp forms as soon as possible. We realise that you might not have all the information, but we can always adjust details later if necessary. Getting the forms early assists us with our planning and organising the event. Pre-payments can also be made via Qkr.
  • Well done to everyone who competed in sports. Please return washed uniforms as soon as possible
  • Keep an eye out for more opportunities for parents to assist Grade 6 students at school (we have some ideas brewing!)

Learning in Action

Literacy

By Charlie

Finally, something new to report. We have just started comparing Olympians to each other and seeing what they have in common, how many medals they’ve won, their ages, and what sports they do. Now some athletes are completely different, which can make it extremely hard to find things in common, but I have faith in year six students to find even the slightest things in common. We've also been busy working on our information reports and grouping sentences to make a paragraph, and then we'll publish our reports. Anyway, that's all from me.

Preview for Learning: For the remainder of the term, students will be busily publishing their information reports. Additionally, students will be creating an information report about one of their years at school in preparation for their end-of-year scrapbook.

Maths

By Bella

In Maths, now that we’ve finally finished our graphs, we are moving on - au revoir graphs. Bonjour, volume, and capacity investigation. We have been working on a project where we measure the volume and capacity of a drawing, there are five levels that get progressively harder. Although I wouldn't know anything about the 5th level, I'm still on level 2! It’s quite fun actually, but extremely hard to explain. We have also been learning about the order of operations or BODMAS, a rule made up by mathematicians to make solving long problems easier. Well, I loved explaining this to you, but I've got to go so, au revoir to you.

Preview for Learning: For the remainder of the term, students will be learning about the Order of Operations for solving mathematical problems and working hard to improve their division skills through individual goal practise. Additionally, students will be persisting through the challenge of investigating volume and capacity through a project that requires them to plan a sports court and swimming pool.

Inquiry

The students have thoroughly engaged with the Geography unit. This fortnight, we explored how different cultures have their traditions and customs, whilst looking at religions around the world. Students took the learning and continued to work on their group slideshow, which will be ready to share in a couple of weeks at our Celebration Morning.

An idea for home would be to chat about the different countries and cultures the students have discovered at school. We have focused a lot on countries in Europe, Asia, and North America, which is helping students to compare with Australia. When we commenced this unit, very few could identify countries on a map other than Australia, USA, China and possibly Russia. Now, it seems students are tuned into maps, including continents, and are more familiar with life beyond our borders.

Wellbeing

More work has been completed on “Help Seeking” recently. We say ‘work’ because it is important that we develop student skills and knowledge on wellbeing. Grade 6M had a go this week at ensuring we communicate clearly, a skill that is not only beneficial in a challenging situation but also when seeking support. Check out the photos of students trying to accurately describe an image for their partner to draw (without telling them what the image is!).

Sport

Tee-Ball

On the first day, we started against Waverley Christian College and lost by a very close score. During the day our bus had taken longer than most of the other schools and sport teams so we had little time to practise. We lost our second game to Park Ridge which was also a close match. On our third game, we moved places and played against the other team and also lost, while the benched people were painting their faces with mud. During our last game, we finally won a game and celebrated! A highlight was Alana’s super catch!! The A team progressed through to division whilst the B team did not.

Netball

On the first day we did an amazing job and won our first match. Sadly, we lost our second and fourth games, but they were both quite a close one. We tied one of our games and the other two we lost but only by a little bit.

On the second day, one of our games we competed against Templeton, and we got absolutely smashed but we still tried our best. In one of our games,  Zoe ran into someone and it was called contact on her. It was quite funny. Everyone did so well on both days, Nya did a bunch of great interceptions when they passed the ball to her player. Thank you to Mr. Thomas for organising this and thank-you to all the coaches, Anceneth, Mrs. Halstead, and Bianca. The A team has progressed through to the Division Finals which is a super effort.

Lawn Bowls

We hopped on the bus with Park Ridge for the first day of lawn bowls at The Basin Primary School. When we got there and got sorted into our schools in the stands, We ate our snacks while we were waiting to play.  After that Ms Holmes sorted us into teams of 4 to play in our first game.  My team won the first game. We kept on playing matches and my team won 3 and lost 1 match.

On the second day, we were confident we would win the grand final. Our teams walked through the doors ready to win. We got sorted into our teams again and waited for the first match.  The music pumped us up while we were dancing. We started our games and started strong. Unfortunately, we did not make the grand final! But we had a great time.

Football

The football carnival was held at Eildon Park. To make a long story short we are going to Division Finals! Go Lysterfield!  We were lucky enough to have two dedicated coaches in a Hicks x Mac combination. Here are some highlights from the two days. The team put Kade forward and much to everyone's surprise he kicked 10 goals in the first day, but he ran too far like 30 times without a bounce! When we were winning by over 100 points, Anthony decided to get some hot chips in the middle of the game, he forgot he could have been rotated back on the ground. Harry got "falconed" in the last game against Templeton. Thank you to Mr. Hicks and Mr. Mac for coaching and thanks to the parent helpers and a big thanks to Mr. Thomas for organising the day. We cannot wait for the next stage!

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

Opportunities to help:

  • Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
  • If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
  • If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, help us to make contact to obtain suitable engineering resources.
  • If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminum Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
  • Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program. Please email sophiechamberlain@lysterfieldps.com or melissaadams@lysterfieldps.com

Thank you for your continued support,
