Learning in Action
Literacy:
This fortnight, students have continued their persuasive unit. They explored the word choice that authors use to make the reader feel emotions, using whole class texts and their own texts to help them carefully consider the emotive language used. Students planned and drafted persuasive paragraphs using their knowledge of modal verbs, transition words and emotive language to enhance their arguments.
In our grammar sessions, students deepened their understanding of coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so - FANBOYS), what they mean and their purpose within a sentence. Students then created three sentences (with the same sentence starter) using a different conjunction in each. You can see some of these in the photos below!
Preview:
Students will build on their inferring skills by thinking about visuals the author uses to support their argument. In Writing, they will go through the writing process to plan, draft, revise and edit their own persuasive text.
Maths:
This fortnight, students have continued their exploration of subtraction by practising breaking numbers apart in different ways to assist with the subtraction process. They have revised using friendly numbers, as well as the jump and split strategy. Students have also been encouraged to think about the links between addition and subtraction in maths games.
Students also had the opportunity to explore the idea of capacity by filling different sized containers full of sand. Then they discussed which had a bigger capacity and how they knew (because if the bigger one was poured into the smaller one, it would overflow).

Students will finish off their subtraction exploration, completing post-tests to monitor progress. Students will also continue to connect addition and subtraction through maths games. Students will also be revising graphing from last term.
Inquiry:
This week the students have been finalising their summaries about Australian landmarks, creating a front and back cover, and compiling these into an informative book to share on Celebration Morning.
Preview:
Students will be learning more about Australian animals, landmarks and connection to Country on their Big Day Out excursion, at Werribee Zoo, Imax and Melbourne Museum.
Wellbeing:
Students have continued looking at their own personal strengths and identified ones that they use everyday. Students chose 3 strengths to focus on for the fortnight, and ones that they might want to improve, and discussed ways they can do this.
Preview:
Students will continue to reflect on their chosen personal strengths and add examples to their display of how they have used their strengths each day. Students will be looking at their friendship goals they set themselves and reflect on their improvement.

Exciting times ahead in STEM!
We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.
Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.
Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:
Opportunities to help:
- Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
- If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
- If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
- If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
- Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program.
