Learning in Action

Reading:

Students are continuing to look at author's opinions and reasons from a variety of texts and how visual elements give information. We looked at what a modal verb is and how they are used in persuasive texts. Students had a go at using modal verbs verbally in sentences with a partner. This week students were forming opinions and sharing statements that support their opinions whilst using the conjunctions 'because' and 'so'.

Students will be forming an opinion about a topic from an informative text that we used when learning about Colombia. They will need to support their opinion with 3 different reasons.

Writing:

Last week students learnt about the purpose of commas and when they are applied in writing. Students had a go at using commas to separate ideas in a list. Then students wrote a sentence about things they like to do on holidays and had to use commas to separate their ideas. This week student we focused on the sentence science card 'adverbial how' where students had to use an adverb to describe the verb.

Students will plan, draft, edit, and publish their persuasive pieces.

Maths:

This fortnight students continued learning about subtraction during our number lessons. They used a bar model to solve problems and applied their knowledge of addition to check if their answer was correct. Students were given problems with missing elements and had to apply a strategy to try to find the missing part.

During our problem-solving lessons, students created Arithmagons using numbers up to 10 and wandered around the room trying to solve other student's problems.

We began our volume and capacity unit and students compared and ordered the volume and capacity of different objects around the room.

Students will be looking at how to find the difference between 2 numbers and will continue learning about capacity.

Inquiry:

Landmarks: Students finished the reflection from the Grade 2 excursion.

Geography: Students created their own map and had to include specific features such as a key and particular objects.

Intercultural: Students learnt about Scotland and Colombia.

Wellbeing:

We have continued to discuss the difference between being an upstander and a bystander and applying this concept to social issues out in the schoolyard.

Students have continued to look into stress management and our friendology lesson was on Gratitude.
