Learning in Action

Wellbeing

Learning in Action:

This fortnight students were asked to describe how to use their strengths to be good friends and family members. Students worked in groups to role-play different strengths in different contexts such as home, classroom, and playground. Students then reflected on personal strengths they have or the people around them have.

Preview for Learning:

As we are near the end of term, students will reflect on all the learning this term. We will revisit the friendship facts, emotions, and the language we know to describe our feelings.

Literacy

Learning in Action:

This fortnight in literacy, students were introduced to the long ‘i’ vowel sounds /igh/, /ie/ and /-y/. We also learnt the long ‘o’ vowel sounds /oa/, /ow/ and /oe/. Students participated in a range of activities that exposed them to these new sounds. They collaborated with a partner to go on word hunts and contribute to class anchor charts, and also made Y charts in their books containing words with their focus sounds.

We also began looking at procedural texts this fortnight, and students learnt the importance of detail when giving or receiving instructions. We had a visit from Mr Wight who had forgotten how to brush his teeth! Students had to make sure when giving Mr Wight instructions, they were very clear and detailed so he could brush his teeth the correct way. We also reflected on a ‘moon gazing’ procedure that did not have enough detail, resulting in students having many different responses. We edited this to make sure it was detailed and all of us had the same results. Students had a go at contributing toward a class procedural text and compared different procedures whilst considering all the different parts that make up a procedure.

Preview for Learning:

In the coming weeks, students will learn the long ‘u’ vowel sounds /ue/ and /ew/. We will engage in a range of different activities to practise reading and writing the new sounds.

Students will also be expanding on simple sentences by adding adjectives to modify or describe nouns. Students will also have a go at writing their own procedural text based on a classroom experience.

Maths

Learning in Action: This fortnight, students have continued learning about subtraction. Students have continued looking at the subtraction number sentence ‘total - part = part’, and realised that when we are solving subtraction problems we are trying to find the unknown part. We have been using a range of materials such as whiteboards, hundreds charts, number lines, unifix cubes and our fingers to model and then explain our thinking to solve problems.

We have continued our ‘Mass and Capacity’ Investigation by comparing the capacity of different containers through the use of unifix cubes to determine which containers hold more. This week, students made their very own lolly jars out of paper and described its mass and capacity.

Preview for Learning:  Over the next fortnight we will conclude our subtraction unit by reflecting on the different strategies we have learnt to solve a range of real-life maths problems. Students will be given a challenge next week to alter their lolly jars to increase or decrease its capacity.

Inquiry

Learning in Action:

This past fortnight in Inquiry students have put on their “reflection hats” to recall parts of their learning from our Geography unit. As it has been a busy unit of learning, students were prompted to show their understanding by completing a Y Chart, which required students to make connections between ‘Natural” and ‘Human Made’ places. It was wonderful to see students independently pick landmarks significant to them and record their personal connections. Some examples from 1PR included

-        Ayla “Lysterfield Lake is nice and fresh. I have been there before” (natural)

-        Thomas “I have so much fun in the city” (human-made)

Preview for Learning: This upcoming fortnight, as we move towards the competition of our unit, students will complete their Y Chart by recording ways they can look after these places. We look forward to sharing our learning with our families on Celebration Morning.

Message from STEM:

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

Opportunities to help:

  • Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
  • If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
  • If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
  • If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
  • Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program. Please email sophiechamberlain@lysterfieldps.com or melissaadams@lysterfieldps.com

Thank you for your continued support,
