Prep News

Important Reminders!

All important dates and events are on our Compass Calendar, please check the calendar regularly to stay up to date!

  • Readers are swapped on Mondays. Please make sure your child brings their old reader and 'Take Home' bag every Monday. Students are required to bring their take-home bags to school daily.
  • Term 2 Celebration morning is on Tuesday 25th of June. Parents and special people are invited into the classroom to celebrate their child’s learning.
  • Little Learners Day is Thursday 27th of June. All Prep students are invited to dress up as their favourite character.
  • Library books DUE on a TUESDAY
  • Every Tuesday, prep students have PMP. On this day, we ask for the girls not to wear tights as it is not safe to participate in these. It would also be great if you could get your child to practise taking off and putting on their socks and shoes so they can do this independently and efficiently.
  • Take-home reading - students will receive a new take-home book every Monday. Students need to practise their reading daily. Below is a suggested structure
Monday - Focus on decoding (sounding out words)
Tuesday - Focus on fluency (reading smoothly)
Wednesday - Focus on comprehension. If you would like further challenges, you can extend your child by having them write about the pictures.
    Thursday - Library book comprehension
Friday - Letter sounds/words in school tools

Learning in Action

Literacy:

Students were introduced to the strategy, ‘looking for parts that we know’. Students were encouraged to 'find smaller words or parts inside words' to help them decode. For example, ‘at’ in ’sat’, ‘it’ in ‘spit’, ‘is’ in ‘his’. Students wrote the words on whiteboards and circled the parts they knew. Students were also introduced to a fluency strategy ‘find and fix’. This is where students monitor for meaning by thinking ‘does that make sense?’ When it doesn’t students find the mistake they made and fix it up to ensure they were reading words correctly. In Writing, students have been working on writing simple sentences. They have written dictated sentences such as ‘Nat spits pips’. Students were also introduced to the Little Learners character Jack the Jellyfish

Preview - Next fortnight we will revise the reading strategies we have learnt and meet our final Little Learners characters!

Maths:

Over the past fortnight, students have continued learning about subtraction and that it means to take away numbers from a total. Students have learnt the strategies of using materials and drawing to work out the subtraction problem. We have also continued our Measurement unit, learning about things that are longer, shorter or the same length. Students enjoyed measuring themselves and created a fun class display of their heights.

Preview- Next fortnight we will revise the strategies we have learnt to solve subtraction problems.

Inquiry:

We had an exciting day with our ‘Community Helper’ afternoon. Students gathered in the Library to listen and talk to three parents who have important roles in our local community. Some speakers included a chiropractor, nurse and a pharmacist. We all loved meeting the life-sized skeleton, learning first aid and eating the jellybeans! A special thank you to the parents who came and presented. We even had a visit from the local Police! We loved exploring the police car and getting to hear the siren blast.

Congratulations to the Prep students (Emmett, Jack, Bella, Chloe and Harley) who presented at this week's assembly. You all looked amazing in your community helper costumes and did an excellent job speaking in front of the whole school.

Preview - Next fortnight we are reflecting on what we have learnt during our Inquiry unit ‘Our Community’. We will display our knowledge in a ‘My Community’ poster. In addition to this, they will make ‘mini me’ puppet to explore their community.

Wellbeing:

We continued our Friendology Program. This week we learnt about the ‘Friend-o-meter’. The Friend-o-meter is a tool we use to identify the difference between a healthy and unhealthy friendship. In Prep we all try our best to be a ‘Green Zone’ friend. We also identified and discussed the impact body language has on our friendships.

Preview- Next fortnight we will continue our Respectful Relationship program.
