5H News

This Term in 5H we have been very busy. Between publishing our own texts, reading and creating our own maps in Maths and researching the history of Australia we have had a wonderful time!

Writing

This term in writing we have published our very own pieces of persuasive writing. The topics were chosen by the students who were encouraged to write about a topic they were passionate about. Here are a few pieces of work from our wonderful students;

  • Claire K: My persuasive writing piece was about how Refugee Camps should have access to basic human rights. I learnt how to use more persuasive devices to make my piece more interesting.
  • Emily L: My piece of writing is about the government making access to homeless shelters easier. I learnt how to persuade people in this unit and I used lots of persuasive devices to help me and I think it turned out really well.

This week we visited Mayflower retirement home. Our visits to Mayflower are inspiring our students next pieces of writing as we will be writing biographies about the residents life. While we are still in the early stages of our writing process the excitement around the outcome of this project is immense.

  • Emilia: I liked meeting my resident Samuel and I liked getting to know about him. I am looking forward to getting to write the biography about him and giving it to him.
  • Leo: I liked learning about Elizabeth when her Dad fought in World War One and what she did during her life. I found it interesting to hear about how she lived through World War Two. I am looking forward to writing the biography and presenting it.

Inquiry

In Inquiry we have been investigating different events that are important to Australian History students have been working with their peers from Grade 5 and 6 to put together a research project. Without revealing to much students will be creating a presentation and artwork and an acting piece of an Open morning to be held later this term!

  • Jordan K: My group is doing the Burke and Wills Expedition and I have been researching lots of facts. I am most excited for the whole project.
  • Evan P: My group has been learning about the Frontier Conflict, this is when the Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal fought the European Settlers. I am looking forward to building the diorama.
  • Will C: My group has been learning about the Gold Rush. We have been learning life before the Gold Rush, life on the gold fields and how the gold rush effected the land. I am looking forward to creating the diorama.
  • Lachie K: My group has been learning about Port Arthur and we are learning about how the worst prisoners were kept in a prison close to Tasmania. We learn about how they were treated there. I am looking forward to the acting out a scene from this time.

Maths

In Maths we have just completed a unit on Location and Transformations. Students demonstrated their ability to use coordinate points to locate positions on a map and to give directions around the map. Students created their own maps of imaginary places with directions to go along

  • Max A: My map is about a Basketball world and I have a lot of basketball related things on the map. My map features a house for Will and I with a big basketball statue on top of it.
  •
  • Elsie: My Map is of the Taylor Swift Era’s Tour and it includes features like the seats, the merchandise tent and the stage and all the album colours.
