LOTE

Bonjour Ripper Community!

Foundation students have settled into Term 2 well and learning all about greetings and introductions in French. We have been practising pronouncing words, identifying how many syllables in words and using expression. The students have enjoyed our speaking and listening tasks. Soon we will commence looking at numbers and colours.

Our students are enjoying our unit on Emotions. We’ve been engaging in activities including improvising, role- play, online programs, and card and board games. The students are learning to ask and answer questions about their emotions.

Year 5/6 have presented their research on Ancient Rome and we loved watching their presentations. It was wonderful to see the students enjoying sharing their research and creations.

We have also been learning about other cultural practices including Bollywood dancing! The students are having a lot of fun with learning new steps and songs.

Merci.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

It has been a busy start to our Term 2 classes in Physical Education!

Our Foundation students have been participating in a ball sports unit, exploring the many different types of balls and practising using them in a variety of ways.

Meanwhile, the focus for the rest of the school has been towards our preparation for the House Athletics Carnival, especially for track and field events . With this school event coming up early in Term 3, all students must have plenty of exposure to the events and the rules, whilst also practising the correct form and technique.

Our Year 1/2 students begin by looking into the modified events they will be participating in. They have enjoyed learning about how to start their sprint races and swapping batons in a relay. They have also recently begun looking at the pushing motion to mimic a shotput throw.

As our Year 3-6 students compete in all the same events, their focuses have looked very similar to begin the term. One of our focuses has been on the more complex crouch start when practising for sprint races. Our senior students are exploring the mechanics of how this will help them to generate more power and speed. They have also looked at the pushing motion using a weighted shotput, focusing on not dropping their elbow and generating power from their body.

I would also like to pass on my congratulations to all our athletes who represented Ripponlea Primary at the Balaclava District Cross Country. It was a lovely day at Elsternwick Park for running, and it was lovely to see everyone try their best and encourage one another on the day.

Our great effort and teamwork saw us finish the day in second place for our school’s category, with our new trophy currently sitting in the cabinet at school!

We will also have two runners - Asher and Vivienne representing our school at the Division Cross Country next Wednesday, so please make sure to say good luck if you see them around!
