YEAR 10 AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE VISITS EQUESTRIAN CENTRE

BY JACKIE EASTWOOD ( SCIENCE TEACHER)

Earlier this month, the Year 10 Agricultural science students went to Ranges Equestrian Centre in Yellingbo to learn how to handle and care for horses. We also learnt about horse body language and how to relate to these beautiful animals. The students had a great time and learnt a lot about horses.

Here are some reflections from students:

It was really fun and a good learning experience. We started brushing out the horses and Katie and I learnt how to put their manes in performance buns. We also put bows and colourful extensions in the horses tail. We learnt how to saddle up before going into a big indoor arena where we led the horse around and learnt how to read body language -Tilly

When we got there we got off the bus and went over to a big barn, we put our bags down and waited for the instructors. While we waited, people were riding horses in the barn next to us. Then two ladies came in and introduced themselves. They then took us to another barn where there were lots of horses in stables. They told us to put helmets on for our safety, and then they told us to split into two groups. One group went over to brush and learn how to maintain horses; one group (my group) learned how to stand and read horses. The lady in our group told us about how to approach a horse, how to lead it out of a stable, and how to be in control of horses. We then after about an hour had a quick lunch break and then went out to the other activity. In the other activity, we learned how to brush horses and what type of brushes to use for different parts of the horse. We could also put bows and ribbons on the horse's hair too. We then went back to the barn and we debriefed and said thankyou - Grace

We learned how to lead a horse with a lead rope walking around in a circle. We also learned how to approach horses safely and effectively and how to care and deal with horses in general -Ella B

CSEN SPORT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

Year 5 Student Reflections:

By Judd W, Tate S, Lilia L and Lexi B

Earlier this month, select Year 5 Students and Year 10 students attended a CSEN Sports leadership day in St Kilda at Albert Park. As we walked in we saw a cafe and a merch store with all of the merchandise of the Melbourne Cricket teams, the Stars and Renegades, and also their trophies in glass shelves. We were greeted with goodie bags with mentos, minties, kitkats, plastic drink bottle, notebook/pen and a pair of socks.

At the break time we got food which was muffins and anything we wanted in our lunch boxes. First we all gathered in one big room with 4 other schools and all listened while main speakers told how God took them on a journey to “ find their why”.

We learned how to put people first before our needs, we also learned to pair goodness and greatness and not greatness and badness.

Our lunch was dim sims, brownies, apple juice and a chicken sandwich. At lunch we played in the batting cage and bowling speed dial. One of the activities was, as a team we had to try to run under a skipping rope. It took us a few tries and then we finally got it under 3 seconds on the way there and back we played a car finding game.

Overall it was a fun day and we learnt a lot about leadership.
