BHCS EXCELLENCE AT THE EDUCATION PERFECT LANGUAGES CHAMPIONSHIP

BY DANIEL DEMA (SECONDARY FRENCH TEACHER)

The Education Perfect Languages Championship 2024 was on for one week between 7th to 14th May. Our school finished the competition second for French out of 55 Victorian schools. Our top performers this year were Kiera L - Yr 10, Evie B - Yr 8 and Alex H - Yr 7 (picture above). All our French students from Year 7 to 10 who participated did really well. We are looking forward to next year, when we will aim again for the top spot in the competition.

TEAM KINDERS EXCITING EXCURSION

BY KIRSTY MEESE (KINDER DIRECTOR)

We are starting to explore the story of Pentecost this term in the lead up to our Kinder Pentecost Festival. As part of our preparation the four-year-old-kinder group went on the first excursion of the year, to Belgrave Heights and South Fire Brigade.

As to be expected the bus is always a highlight for our youngest students and it was with much delight as we went on our way to hear calls of “look, they look like astronaut seats” to the bus seats, “I’ve never been on a bus before” and “this is the way to Dad’s hardware store”.

During our visit we learnt that not only do firefighters fight fires but they also attend car accidents, and help people and/or pets who are locked in cars. Firefighter Kirsten and Firefighter James told us that as well as fighting fires they have also rescued a horse from a large hole, attended a tractor fire and helped teach people about fire safety.

During our visit we enjoyed seeing the “turnout room” where all the firefighter uniforms are kept as well as being able to have a look in the cupboards on a fire truck and see all the equipment that is stored on a fire truck: hoses, axe, rake hoe, brooms, defibrillator, first aid kit, snacks and breathing apparatus are just a small number of the items. We learnt that if there's a fire or if we need help in an emergency that we should ring 000, state what help we need, and where we are located.

Team Kinder had a fabulous first excursion and are already looking forward to our next

adventure on a school bus.

YEAR 6 VISIT SCIENCEWORKS

BY DARREN HORTON (YEAR 6 CO-ORDINATOR)

Year 6s board two buses, destination — Scienceworks.

We arrived at Scienceworks after an hour or so on the bus. The students enjoyed a well-earned snack - surrounded by friends, seagulls and the anticipation of a great day!

Students divided into 7 groups and went into the ‘general viewing’ area.

Highlights were wheelchair races, running to beat Cathy Freeman, strength and agility tests. After almost 30 minutes, it was time to depart for our first adventure, The Lightning Room.

Inside The Lightning Room, we were greeted by a very enthusiastic Scienceworks staff member. We explored the topic, Lights, Energy, Action. Our birthday boy, got to participate in an experiment.  We explored the different types of energy.

Our next adventure was the Planetarium.

In the Planetarium, we explored the planets that have water. We looked at the Milky Way and the importance of the place of the Sun, Earth and other planets.

After a visit to the toilets, we boarded the buses and headed for a long journey back to BHCS.

A special thanks to Mrs Hargrave, Mrs Angus and Chaplain Liam for joining the Year 6 team on one of our very last primary school excursions as well as Stuart, our trusty bus driver.

CSEN SPORT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

Year 5 Student reflection: By Judd W, Tate S, Lilia L and Lexi B

Earlier this month, select Year 5 Students and Year 10 students attended a CSEN Sports leadership day in St Kilda at Albert Park. As we walked in we saw a cafe and a merch store with all of the merchandise of the Melbourne Cricket teams, the Stars and Renegades, and also their trophies in glass shelves. We were greeted with goodie bags with mentos, minties, kitkats, plastic drink bottle, notebook/pen and a pair of socks.

At the break time we got food which was muffins and anything we wanted in our lunch boxes. First we all gathered in one big room with 4 other schools and all listened while main speakers told how God took them on a journey to “ find their why”.

We learned how to put people first before our needs, we also learned to pair goodness and greatness and not greatness and badness.

Our lunch was dim sims, brownies, apple juice and a chicken sandwich. At lunch we played in the batting cage and bowling speed dial. One of the activities was, as a team we had to try to run under a skipping rope. It took us a few tries and then we finally got it under 3 seconds on the way there and back we played a car finding game.

Overall it was a fun day and we learnt a lot about leadership.
