3/4 B

Week 6 Term 2

Literacy

Over the past week we have begun engaging with tasks that involve informative writing. Last week we were casting a critical eye on different facts from a variety of sources and placing them on a scale from most believable to least believable. Students had to place their fact on the scale and justify their responses. As we begin collecting information for our Inquiry projects and plan for Informative writing it will be important for the students to use credible sources of information and search for information on Google using refined questioning.

Inquiry

Last week we took advantage of the great late autumn weather and headed out into the playground to look at our school 'ecosystem'. We were searching for a variety of things including producers (plant life), consumers (animals) and decomposers (worms and fungi). We had a talk about other ecosystems in our local area and shared places we'd visited. We all agreed that Frankston has so many wonderful ecosystems to explore and learn about including Port Phillip Bay (the beach) and Sweetwater Creek.

Maths

This past week we have been learning about fractions. We have been consolidating our understanding of unit fractions such as 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5. We've been demonstrating our knowledge and understanding of fractions through words, pictures and numbers. The students have enjoyed a variety of different games and hands on experiences. As part of our home learning this past week the students will have found plenty of different fractions activities to further their learning on this topic.

How many jelly beans?

I was very fortunate to receive this large container of jelly beans for my birthday (in red and black colours of course!). So I thought we'd have a guessing competition to see how many jelly beans might be in there. Each students will have the opportunity to make their guess and the person who is closest will receive their own prize. The only catch is that the students will need to wait until I eat them for me to tell them how many there were!

Regards,
