Reptile Encounters Adaptations Incursion
Our 5/6 Students shared a wonderful animal adaptation incursion where they discovered how animals use their ecological niche to seek food and avoid predation, drought, and harsh environments. The students learned about understanding common structural, behavioural, and physiological adaptations to the Australian environment, along with seeing some of our very own wildlife. The student's faces say it all.
3/4 Forces and Motion Studies
This Term the 3/4 students have been studying Forces and Motion in Term 2 via an excursion and even hosting an incursion! Students applied their knowledge to create different games and toys that utilised different forces, including gravity, friction, magnetism, push/pull and inertia. To put their learning into practice, the students were asked to design a game or toy that involved the use of force, using everyday household materials. The students worked hard for the last few weeks designing, making and modifying their toys and games.
Excursion
The students went on a walking excursion to one of the local playgrounds to interact and discuss forces in our everyday environment. They had fun interacting with the playground equipment, balls and a parachute and were able to identify forces such as gravity, friction, and air resistance.
Toy Expo
The 3/4's held a ‘Forces Toy Expo’ and invited their families to come in and play our games. Thank you very much to all the families who attended and enjoyed playing the students’ games! It was wonderful to see the groups working collaboratively on their project.
Ian Potter Gallery Excursion
Last week all of the 1/2 students explored the Ian Potter gallery at NGV. They left the school early to catch the morning train, seeing many parents and friends on the way. Once arrived they split into groups to explore the gallery and the many works of Indigenous artists and learn about Indigenous culture for their inquiry unit 'Connection to land'. Students ended the day at the 'Birrarung Marr' playground before returning to school.
Recycling Club
This term we have commenced a recycling club in the primary space. Many students bring juice boxes and flavoured milk cartons as part of their recess and lunch, and we will be collecting these eligible containers for the 10-cent deposit scheme and fundraising for the school. Students have been creating posters and will be helping me to collect the containers. If you would like to collect your containers at home, you can choose to donate to Altona College Fundraising Committee via the CDS Vic West phone application. Please see the included infographic that the students have helped to create for more information. – Miss Bragg
