Spotlight on Learning - Room 7
This week, our class has been learning about the significance of Remembrance Day and why it is important to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by soldiers in wars around the world. As part of our study, we focused on understanding the deep meaning behind the poppy, which has become a symbol of remembrance for those who gave their lives in military service.
Remembrance Day, observed each year on November 11th, is a time for us to stop and honour the brave men and women who fought and died in wars. It’s a day for us to remember their courage and selflessness. In class, we learned that the poppy flower became a symbol of remembrance after World War I. The red poppy flower grew in the fields where soldiers had fought and fallen, and it quickly became a symbol of the lives lost in battle.
To help our students understand the importance of this day, we discussed the meaning of the poppy in more detail. We talked about how wearing a poppy is a way to show respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made by soldiers, both past and present. The red colour of the poppy represents the blood shed by soldiers during wartime, while the black centre symbolizes the mourning for those who lost their lives.
To honour the fallen soldiers, our students created their own poppies. The children carefully crafted their poppies and wrote of their understandings and questions surrounding their learning. Students also reflected on the importance of peace and how we can contribute to making the world a better place, inspired by the courage and kindness shown by the soldiers.
Our classroom is now filled with these beautiful poppies, which serve as a reminder of the true meaning of Remembrance Day. By creating their own poppies, students not only learned about history but also understood the significance of paying tribute to those who have fought for our freedom. It was a moving experience for all, and we encourage families to continue reflecting on the importance of this day.
