AHISA Debating Novice Division Winners 2024
In Term 3, several enthusiastic Year 7 and Year 8 debaters banded together to form a Novice Team to debate in the AHISA Debating Competition, run by the Western Australian Debating League. Building on their skills honed during the 2024 WADL Debating Competition held in Term 2, the boys battled competition from schools such as Hale School, Perth College and St. Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School to clinch the win as winners for their Division!
Topics for each debate included:
- This house supports the development of shorter versions of sports games (E.g. T20 cricket)
- This house believes that military leaders should be directly elected by citizens
- This house believes that students should only have one teacher throughout their primary schooling
- This house should develop memory erasing technology
The boys put in incredible effort in preparing their points for each of these topics and spoke confidently each evening, presenting well-outlined arguments and offering thoughtful rebuttals. The teamwork and support offered in the lead up to each debate was admirable and certainly reflected the can-do attitude and commitment to excellence displayed by each student.
Well done to: Spencer Hathrill (8.2), Jasper Morris-Luck (8.5), Riley Hall (8.4), Lucas Hall (8.4), Leo Pileggi (7.4), Matteo Redolatti (8.3), Theo Shewell (7.7) and Thomas Batten (8.7)!
This marks the beginning of what I believe to be the new epoch of debating at Trinity College and I look forward to seeing our debating students develop their skills even further over the coming years.
