CURRICULUM FOCUS
This week in Maths we are learning to compare and measure the mass of objects.
- I can compare the mass of objects using estimation.
- I can compare the mass of objects using direct comparisons.
- I can compare and order the mass of objects.
VOCABULARY
Mass: is a measurement of how much matter is in an object that is in a solid, liquid or a gas. It is measured in kilograms and grams.
Estimation: a careful guess as to the amount, size, or value of something.
Compare: to note or describe the similarities or differences of.
Order: arrange according to size, amount or value.
ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING
Mass Hunt Around the House
Materials: A set of small household objects (e.g. a spoon, a toy, an apple).
Activity: Ask your child to go on a "mass hunt" around the house and find objects of varying weights. They can try to sort the objects from lightest to heaviest. If a kitchen scale is available, they can measure the actual mass of each object and see if their predictions were accurate.
Learning Goal: Develop an understanding of the mass of everyday objects and practice comparing different weights.
