Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

As Week 3 concludes, we are ramping up to an eventful final several weeks of Year 6. Next week, students will participate in a first aid incursion, in which they will learn practical and useful skills, followed by a four-day weekend due to the Melbourne Cup public holiday.

From then, the students can look forward to further exciting activities, such as interschool sports and a day at Bounce, as we approach graduation.

Mathematics:

This week we have continued exploring fractions, decimals and percentages through the lens of buying shares on the stock market.

How you can help at home: You can help by asking your child to explain how they convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages in everyday situations. Taking them shopping and asking how to calculate the discount when an item is 50%, 25% or 10% off  is a great way for students to demonstrate their mathematical knowledge. You can also discuss shares and responsible investing with your children.

English:

This week, students continued reading the novel, "Can You See Me" by Libby Scott and Rebecca Westcott. The story is told through the eyes of a Year 7 student who has autism. It is very relevant to our Year 6 cohort as it shows another perspective to the transition into high school and potentially other issues students might face.

In writing, our focus has been a persuasive text, looking at the pros and cons of increasing recess and lunch times, as well as the impact of having therapy animals at schools. Students have started learning how to structure persuasive texts effectively, building strong points to convince their readers. They have examined material using note taking techniques collecting information which will help support their arguments.

How you can help at home:

Engage your child in discussions about relevant topics like whether students need to access social media. Students can learn how to deliver persuasive arguments through meaningful discussions.

Religious Education:

In Religion, students have explored how to bring peace to the world. Students have examined ways to use their talents and attributes to serve others.

AUSLAN:

This week In AUSLAN, students have been learning the signs for farm animals. They then practiced using these signs in conversations.

SEL:

In our SEL lessons, students learnt about what constitutes sexual harassment and sexual assault, and what to do if they are ever subject to or witness such unacceptable behaviours.

Next week, students from 6A and 6C will take their turn participating in a Kids Helpline session providing them with guidance on the transition into high school.

Integrated Studies:

This week in Integrated Studies, we focused on dynamics in the context of music - the interplay between quiet and loud sounds. Students explored how setting, number and type of instruments, and technology can alter dynamics. Students have continued practicing songs for carols and graduation.
