Chess starts for Term 4

Term 4 sees both Representative and Social players preparing for the final major event on the chess calendar. The Sarah Sommerland Tournament will be held in week 7, with schools from both Tamworth and Armidale invited to take part.

McCarthy Chess Club finished Term 3 with games against Calrossy as well as being part of the Final of the NSW Secondary Schools Competition for the North West Region.

The games against Calrossy were friendly, designed to help develop the playing skills of all players. The McCarthy players were great ambassadors for the school and it was pleasing to see the wide range of skills that the players from the Chess Club have.

During the last week of school, Social and Representative players headed to NEGS to play friendly games and the Regional Final against the Armidale Secondary College. Players from Oxley High School also accompanied the team to take part.

The friendly games were another chance for players to develop skills and get to know players from other schools. The McCarthy social players were able to play games against students from Oxley High School, Armidale Secondary College and NEGS.

The Regional Final games were also played on this day. It was the first time our representative players have reached a final. The representative players had to play against Armidale Secondary College, who had just come off a 4 - 0 win over Oxley High School. Our players did the school proud, drawing with Armidale Secondary College 2-2. Unfortunately, Armidale Secondary College won the final on a differential. Well done to Izayah Simmons, Chaise Gwatkin, Jackson Medlock and Tobias Porter.
