Cultivating Knowledge: Encouraging Exploration and Discovery

The IB Learner Profiles are central to the Primary Years Programme (PYP), guiding students in their development as well-rounded individuals. There are 10 Learner Profiles, and throughout Term 4, we will focus on several of them. This newsletter article places particular emphasis on "Knowledgeable." This highlights the importance of understanding a wide range of subjects and concepts. Knowledgeable learners engage deeply with the material, fostering critical thinking and the ability to make connections across disciplines.

Encouraging your child to explore diverse topics can enhance their curiosity and understanding. Consider visiting museums, reading books together, or discussing current events. Asking open-ended questions can stimulate their thinking and encourage them to express their ideas.

At Good News Lutheran College, we promote inquiry-based learning, where students investigate real-world issues, developing both knowledge and skills. We believe that fostering a love for learning helps students become confident, informed individuals who can navigate the complexities of the world. Together, we can inspire a lifelong passion for learning in our children!

Year 2 Students: Emerging Knowledgeable Leaders

The Year 2 students have made a commendable start to Term 4, demonstrating a deep understanding of leadership and its essential qualities. Through engaging brainstorming sessions, students actively explored the concept of leadership, identifying key traits and characteristics. Their reflective responses revealed a remarkable level of insight and self-awareness, as they connected their personal experiences to the broader themes of leadership.

The students' ability to articulate their Term 4 goals, based on their individual strengths and areas for growth, showcases their understanding of the knowledgeable IB learner profile. By setting targeted objectives aligned with their leadership development, they are positioning themselves for future success. Their early achievements in this area are a testament to their commitment to personal growth and their capacity to become effective, knowledgeable leaders.

Mambourin Prep Inquiry Immersion Activity

As the Prep students have developed their vocabulary and speaking skills they are more able to share their learning, thoughts and knowledge with their teachers and peers, alike. This term we are embarking on a new How We Express Ourselves unit, with the central idea being, “Senses help people explore the human and natural world”. We opened this unit with the children exploring new and magical worlds set up in their classrooms (Space, a Cafe, a Forest and the Beach). The rooms were full of sounds, smells and experiences to explore touch. The students were immersed in an experience that allowed us to discover their prior knowledge and experiences in the world. These provocations offered the children new ways to apply self-management skills and allowed them to engage with the new unit.
