Grade 5/6 News

English: Morphology

This week, we've been learning about the prefix -out and -sub and its meaning. Students have been analysing words with this prefix and identifying the base of the word to find its meaning. They have also been spelling, reading, and using these words in sentences throughout the week.

Writing In Writing, the students have been busy rehearsing our modelled text The Kingdom of Narnia with the support of our story map and actions. In addition, we have analysed how the author uses a range of writing tools to engage the reader in informative writing, such as using generalisers, connectives, pronouns to speak directly to the reader and comparing similar ideas. Following this, students have begun to use the text structure to begin their own information reports on a place or land of their choosing and learned to innovate the text and practice their writing tools.

Maths

In Maths, the students have started learning about reading and plotting co-ordinates on a grid. This involved understanding using the x-axis first and then followed by the y-axis.

Caring Companions

This week we started the Caring Companions buddy program which fosters meaningful connections with our future Year 6 students and the current children in 4-year-old Kinder at Wimba Kindergarten. In this program, our Year 5 students will visit the kindergarten over two sessions to read stories and engage in playful, educational activities with the Kindergarten children. This initiative aims to build confidence and leadership skills in the older students while providing the kindergarteners with positive role models and a supportive introduction to the school community. The program strengthens bonds across age groups and enhances the transition experience for the kinder students.

Reminders

  • Camp: While we have some time before our camp, we’d like to gather numbers on who will be attending. It’s a one-night adventure with activities like kayaking, archery, giant swings, yabby catching, and an orienteering treasure hunt. It should be a very exciting time for those choosing to attend. If your child will not be attending, please inform us via Compass by selecting "decline" to avoid follow-up calls.
  • Family Trips: If you plan to travel for an extended period during the school term, please notify the school. This helps us manage attendance without needing daily updates from you.
