Grade 2 News

Grade 2 has hit the ground running in Term 4 and has really dived into learning! Here's a sneak peek at what we've been up to over the last three weeks—there's been lots of exciting things happening in our classroom!

English-

Over the past three weeks in English, we've explored alternative spellings for the sounds /j/, /f/, and /n/, and strengthened our informative writing skills using Story Champs. Daily handwriting practice has helped improve fine motor skills, while reading fluency activities have enhanced our students' confidence and comprehension. We’ve also been working on partner spelling to reinforce spelling patterns and choices.

Speaking and Listening-

Students have been practising manipulating more complex sounds in spoken words through knowledge of blending and segmenting sounds, phoneme deletion and substitution. Students are doing this everyday using a resource called Heggerty. Students have been also focusing on understanding vocabulary on new topics. It has been great to see them beginning to make interesting word choices.

Maths

For Maths, we've been focusing on important time-telling skills in both analogue and digital formats. Students have been learning to read and understand times such as o’clock, half past, quarter past, and quarter to. In addition, we've been tackling addition through worded problems, using various strategies to solve them. For subtraction, students have been practising strategies like bridging, the jump strategy, and the split strategy to enhance their problem-solving skills and build confidence.

Knowledge

In our current Knowledge unit, we’re exploring the fascinating world of Ancient Greece. Students are learning about the origins of the Olympic Games, what life was like in Ancient Athens, and the timeline of significant events that shaped Greece today. Through these lessons, we're helping students build a deeper understanding of the culture, history, and lasting impact of Ancient Greece. It's been an exciting journey into the past!

Looking Ahead-

Lego Incursion- Thursday 7th November

In Term 4 for STEM, the grade 2 students will be learning about push and pull forces. Students will travel to the Lego Discovery Centre where they will engage in a push car derby workshop. They will also have the opportunity and explore the attraction including a 4D cinema, themed Lego build zones, and a small selection of rides. Please remember to pay and give consent for your child to attend the event via Compass.

Colour Run- Friday 1st November

We're fast approaching our first ever Spectacular Colour Fun Run, with just under two weeks to go. It’s time to get ready for our colour run!

Just a reminder that if you would like to go into the draw to slime one of our lovely teachers, you need to raise just $50. AND if you're one of the top 3 students who raise the most amount of money, you will get to slime Mr. Schwartz!

Did you know; If every student raises 20 dollars we can raise $5,000 for our school and improve our resources to help students grow and learn.
