Injury Reduction and Management Workshops

A review on the webinar hosted by Amy O'Shannassy and Ben Oliver

At Ivanhoe Edge, we are dedicated to equipping our students and families with the tools and knowledge to excel while prioritizing their health and safety. Recently, we were privileged to host parent and student workshops led by expert physiotherapists Amy O'Shannassy and Ben Oliver. These sessions delved into essential strategies for injury prevention, providing invaluable insights into why injuries happen and how they can be avoided.

Amy and Ben, both renowned for their expertise in sports physiotherapy, covered several critical topics, ensuring participants left with a well-rounded understanding of injury management and prevention.

Key Themes Discussed

Why Injuries Happen: Amy explained common injury causes, including overuse, poor movement patterns, and the impact of growth spurts on young athletes. She highlighted how rapid growth can temporarily affect coordination and increase vulnerability to injuries if not carefully managed.

Understanding Training Load: Ben introduced the concept of training load, explaining how balancing intensity, duration, and recovery is crucial. Sudden spikes in activity or insufficient rest were identified as key contributors to overuse injuries, with practical advice given on how to adjust workloads safely.

The Importance of Strength Training: Strength training was emphasized as a foundation of injury prevention. Amy highlighted how it improves movement patterns, supports proper biomechanics, and builds resilience against injuries such as sprains and strains.

The Role of Sleep: Ben underscored the critical role of sleep in recovery, tissue repair, and athletic performance. He recommended 8–10 hours of sleep nightly, especially during growth spurts or periods of intense training, to support recovery and development.

The Value of Screening: Regular screenings during growth spurts were discussed as a proactive tool for injury prevention. Amy and Ben explained how these assessments can identify changes in strength, mobility, and coordination, enabling tailored strategies to mitigate risk.

Hands-On Learning for Students

The student workshops offered a practical, interactive experience:

  • Students learned how and why to tape a joint, exploring how taping can support stability, protect against injury, and aid recovery.
  • They participated in mock screening sessions, gaining a clear understanding of what to expect and how screenings can be used to address individual needs during key growth phases.
  • Amy and Ben answered numerous student questions about their own injuries and pains, providing tailored advice and recommendations.

Building Stronger Connections

Amy and Ben proved to be incredible resources for our students, sharing their expertise with clarity and enthusiasm. The sessions not only educated but empowered students to take ownership of their injury prevention and recovery.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with Amy and Ben, ensuring Ivanhoe Edge families have access to the best knowledge and care as we foster a safe and supportive environment for our young athletes to thrive.
