Inquiry

Year 5 & 6 Inquiry Focus - Term 4: Fun Fair Project
This term, our inquiry unit will culminate in the highly anticipated Fun Fair, where children will dive into the world of design, economics, and business as they create and sell their own products and services.
Our Lines of Inquiry will focus on:
- Product Creation and Supply Chain – We will explore the steps involved in designing and creating a product, understanding how raw materials become the finished item.
- Marketing Strategies and Consumer Choice – We will investigate how advertising and marketing influence consumer decisions, and how students can apply these strategies to promote their products.
- Trade-offs in Product Design and Manufacturing – We will consider the compromises businesses make in product design, weighing factors such as quality, cost, and sustainability.
- Profit and Loss – By creating a budget, tracking expenses, and calculating profits, students will learn how to manage finances and understand the impact of business decisions on profit and loss.
Key Teacher Questions to guide the inquiry include:
- What is the process for products to be designed and created?
- What influences a consumer's choice?
- How are product decisions made to suit the business?
- What impacts profit and loss?
The unit will culminate in the Fun Fair Market, where students will sell their products to the school community. They will have the opportunity to interact with students from all year levels, manage their own sales, and handle money as they track earnings in real-time.
After the market, students will reflect on the business and marketing choices they made. They will assess what worked well, what challenges they encountered, and how they might adjust their strategies in the future to increase sales and improve profitability.
This hands-on experience will give students a practical understanding of economics, product development, and entrepreneurial thinking!
