Mathematics

This term in mathematics, we will explore a variety of concepts across space, statistics, and numbers.

In Space, we will focus on translations, reflections, and rotations of shapes, helping students develop spatial awareness. They will also investigate symmetry and tessellations, examining how shapes fit together without gaps or overlaps to create repeating patterns.

In Statistics, we will work on interpreting data sets, with a focus on the range and patterns of data sets using side-by-side column graphs, dot plots, and bar charts. Our children will also plan and conduct their own statistical investigations, posing questions, collecting relevant data, and choosing appropriate ways to display and interpret their findings. Using digital tools, they will compare distributions of discrete and continuous data and critique media arguments based on statistics.

In Number, a key focus will be on mastering times tables and reinforcing number skills. We will practice quick recall of their multiplication facts to help with problem-solving and mental math. This fluency will support their understanding in real-world contexts, such as adding and subtracting amounts of money, and determining appropriate rounding when estimating costs.

They will also focus on estimating percentages in everyday situations, such as calculating discounts using common percentages like 10%, 25%, 30%, and 50%.

A highlight this term will be the creation of a budget for the Fun Fair. We will use the internet to research costs and expenses, and represent their budget in a spreadsheet, using formulas to calculate totals. This project will give them valuable experience in managing profit and loss, providing a hands-on approach to financial literacy.
