English
Students have been developing their writing skills through a focus on different text types across the year levels. Year 5 students have been exploring persuasive writing, learning how to form and clearly express their own opinions, use reasons and evidence to support their ideas, and structure their writing effectively. Year 6 students have been focusing on narrative writing, developing characters, settings, and plot structure while experimenting with descriptive language.
In these early weeks of the term, students are building their understanding of how to plan, structure, edit, and improve their writing. They are learning to reread their work, make purposeful edits, applying feedback to strengthen their ideas. Students are also forming individual English learning goals for the term, helping them develop a clear understanding of their current strengths and the next steps in their learning journey.
Students continue to build their vocabulary and reading skills through exposure to a range of texts and explicit teaching. They are practising reading fluency and comprehension strategies, answering questions using evidence from the text, and making inferences to demonstrate a deeper understanding of what they read.
Maths
Students have been developing their understanding of place value through a range of engaging and hands-on activities. They have used number lines, card games, and problem-solving tasks to help them understand the value of digits and how numbers can be represented in different ways. These activities have supported students in building confidence when reading, ordering, and comparing numbers.
Students are beginning to form individual Maths learning goals for the term. This process supports students in identifying their current understanding of place value and setting clear goals for improvement as they continue to develop their mathematical skills. Students are being encouraged to explain their thinking, use mathematical language, and apply their understanding across a range of tasks as the term progresses.
Inquiry
Students are learning about democracy, laws, and leadership, and how these systems affect everyone in society. They are exploring the importance of rules and laws, the roles of leaders, and the rights and responsibilities people have within a community. Through discussion and learning activities, students are developing an understanding of how decisions are made and why these systems are important for a fair and functioning society.
Students will continue to build their inquiry skills by asking questions, sharing ideas, and
reflecting on how these concepts connect to their own lives and the wider community.
Interschool Sport
Students participated in an interschool sport taster session. Students rotated through a range of sports, including; AFL, soccer, netball, and softcross, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to try each activity.
The session was filled with enthusiasm, teamwork, and plenty of smiles, as students challenged themselves, tried new skills, and supported one another. Even though not all students will participate in interschool sports, the taster session encouraged everyone to give it a go and work hard across all activities.
