Teaching and Learning Update

Staff Professional Learning
On Wednesday 18 February, all learning space staff came together for a professional practice day led by guest facilitators Bronwyn Ryrie Jones and Brydon O’Neill-Guy. The day marked the beginning of a year-long partnership, with staff working alongside Brydon to further strengthen and refine mathematical practice across the school.
Throughout the day, staff deepened their understanding of the importance of responsive teaching—recognising and responding to students’ learning needs in the moment to ensure every learner is supported and challenged appropriately. A key component of this learning was exploring the ‘instructional hierarchy’, which highlights that students move through different phases when learning new knowledge and skills: acquisition, fluency, and maintenance. Understanding these phases helps teachers select the most effective teaching strategies at the right time.
There was also a strong focus on the use of ‘Daily Review’. Staff explored how purposeful daily review supports students to retrieve previously learnt information, strengthening memory and building confidence. To support this learning, Brydon provided a live demonstration of a high-quality Daily Review, modelling effective practice and giving staff a clear, practical example to implement in their teaching.
This professional learning day was a valuable and exciting start to our partnership, setting a clear direction for continued growth in our Mathematics teaching and, most importantly, improved learning outcomes for our students.
