Year 7 Camp fun!

Our Year 7 students enjoyed spending time at the Spring Beach Youth Camp, as part of their welcome to MacKillop. Students had the opportunity to participate in kayaking, rock climbing, team building games and even some toasted marshmallows by the campfire.

It was wonderful to see students forming new friendships and encouraging their peers throughout the camp. What an exciting start to the year for our Year 7's!

Object Design

Students in the UTAS University Connections Program – Object Design, a Year 11/12 course, spent an inspiring day at the School of Creative Arts, exploring contemporary design and beginning to develop ideas responding to this year’s brief, “Imbalance.”

During the excursion, students took part in rapid design challenges, toured specialised facilities, met mentors, and collaborated with peers from other schools to analyse spaces and consider how design shapes environments and user experience.

The day offered a valuable hands‑on learning experience, helping students broaden their thinking, make new connections, and grow confidence in their creative practice.

Order up!

Our Year 11/12 Food, Cooking and Nutrition class were busy cooking up a storm recently, as they prepared their favourite breakfast treat.

Each student selected a dish they wished to enjoy, and spent time researching the perfect recipe to create their 'Big Breakfast'.

What delicious creations!

Learning valuable skills and knowledge for the future!

Recently a group of students had the opportunity to undertake their White Card training and testing onsite at MacKillop.

This one-day course is a requirement for all construction workers undertaking activities on worksites, so that they are equipped to work safely and prevent injury or harm to themselves or others.

Learning vital knowledge on personal protection equipment and common building hazards, this qualification will allow students to be ready to head to the worksite after they graduate from the College.

What a bee-autiful way to learn!

This term, students in the Learning Hub are studying the book 'A Year on the Farm' to encourage learning about the seasons, different types of farms and animals you may find on a farm.

As part of this unit, students have made their own butter and looked at soil structure using food to make a soil profile. Mrs Judy Mills brought in some honey, a beekeeping suit and frames from her beehive at home for students to engage with in hands-on learning.

From Gumnuts to Buttons: Year 9 History classes explore Tasmania’s early colonial history

Our Year 9 History students participated in the From Gumnuts to Buttons incursion, an engaging and deeply meaningful learning experience presented by Tasmanian Aboriginal educators Trish Hodge and Cassius Everett.

The session connected directly with the students’ current studies on the British occupation of Tasmania in the early 1800s. Through storytelling and cultural knowledge, Trish and Cassius guided students to consider what life was like for Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples before colonisation — and how dramatically that life was disrupted by British arrival.

Students learned about:

  • the deep cultural, familial and linguistic connections that shaped Aboriginal life prior to invasion
  • the rapid and often devastating impacts of colonisation, including displacement, loss of language, and the breakdown of traditional family structures
  • the resilience and continuity of Tasmanian Aboriginal culture, and the ongoing work to reclaim language, identity and connection to Country

The incursion offered students a powerful opportunity to hear First Nations perspectives firsthand, enriching their understanding of Tasmania’s past and encouraging thoughtful reflection on its lasting legacies. Experiences like this help ground historical study in real voices and living culture, making the past both accessible and relevant.

A night to remember!

Our Year 10 students enjoyed the opportunity to kick up their heels and celebrate as a cohort at their Year 10 Welcome to Senior School Dinner. Students enjoyed a delicious meal as they danced the night away to the sounds of a DJ and showed off their best moves

What a wonderful chance to welcome our Year 10 students into their final few years of education at MacKillop Catholic College, it was certainly a special occasion.
