A message from Stage 2
Welcome to Stage 2, 2026! We are excited to work closely with you this year to support your child on their learning journey. Throughout the year, we will be focusing on many exciting areas, including goal setting and peer feedback, building resilience, PAX behaviours and wellbeing strategies, developing independent work habits, and fostering teamwork through group activities. We look forward to providing opportunities that promote inclusive education and inspire a lifelong love of learning.
Students have begun studying the classic book Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl. During English sessions, students focus on Component A and Component B. These components are based on Fantastic Mr Fox and are designed to deepen students’ understanding of spelling strategies, build vocabulary, develop reading fluency and comprehension, and enhance their understanding of narrative texts, all while fostering creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills.
A summary of the unit:
Students read and listen to the story Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl.
Students engage in discussions to build comprehension of characters, setting, and plot.
Activities include identifying story elements like problem and solution, and making predictions.
Students explore themes such as bravery, cleverness, and family.
Creative tasks may include drawing scenes or character profiles and retelling parts of the story.
Students focus on developing vocabulary and language skills related to narrative texts.
Students plan and write their own descriptive texts inspired by Fantastic Mr Fox.
They develop skills in persuasive and imaginative writing, including using vivid language and details.
Students have opportunities to work collaboratively in groups to share ideas, provide peer feedback, and edit writing.
Oral presentations or dramatizations may be included to build confidence and communication skills.
Students reflect on the story’s messages and relate these to personal experiences and real-world contexts.
Students reinforce literacy skills like spelling, grammar, and punctuation within writing tasks.
Maths groups across Stage 2 have started. During these sessions, students have the opportunity to focus on their individual learning needs and work on the next steps in their maths development. In Units 1 and 2, students build a strong foundation in key mathematical areas, including number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. They engage in activities that develop problem-solving and reasoning skills, as well as applying maths to real-life situations. These Stage 2 maths units are designed to meet individual learning needs, helping every student progress confidently in their mathematical understanding.
Home reading is encouraged to support your child’s learning. Regular home reading in Stage 2 helps build important skills like reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. It supports learning across all subjects and encourages a love of reading by allowing children to choose books they enjoy. Practising reading at home also builds confidence and helps children progress at their own pace.
A home reading log will be sent home with your child. Please record any reading they do in this log. Reading materials will be provided and changed weekly or fortnightly by your child’s teacher. If your child prefers to read books from home or borrow books from the library, these can also be logged in the reading record.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office or email your child’s teacher. You can find email addresses and important dates on the note that was sent home earlier this term.
We look forward to supporting your child’s growth and learning this year!
