This week, we’re shining a spotlight on and celebrating the wonderful learning of our amazing Year 5 students!
Literacy
Students have been exploring the world of narratives, learning how to make their writing engaging and powerful. They have developed their skills in "show, don't tell" and practiced using descriptive language to bring their stories to life.
Here is a selection of narrative excerpts from some talented Grade 5 students, showcasing their creativity and storytelling skills! ✨
‘On a very crisp and snowy evening it was time to board the train as Cole stepped in. At last it was warm. He took his coat off and searched to find his ticket But he couldn't find it. He yelled for his mum so his mum came to give him his ticket. As he sat down his seat creaked and suddenly the train came to a halt.'

'As the plane started catching speed, the wheels had caught fire. As Craig watched through his drenched-of-rain window, He saw a sparkle of flame come from the wheel. His body shivered and once he was in the air the wheel was off to Antarctica. It had flown so much that Craig couldn’t believe his eyes'.

'Curious Ella awoke to find a peculiar gift beside her bed, she lifted the stiff lid and felt excitement rush down her veins. She saw an old rustic key placed on a small pouch of cushion.'

In Reading, students have been exploring the novel Wonder during reading groups as part of their novel study. They are excited to continue reading and uncover more about the characters and their journeys. Here are some insightful responses from students as they engage with the story!
We looked at a metaphor in the story, the Dad said sending August to school would be like “a lamb to slaughter”, this means that August going to school would be like him having a target on his back to be bullied.

I have enjoyed Wonder as a good class novel. I’ve learnt a lot about the boy August and how his life is and the challenges he faces because of how he looks.

Maths
Students have been exploring perimeter and area. As part of their learning, they designed their ideal bedroom and calculated the area of various objects, such as beds, desks, and wardrobes, from a bird’s-eye view. Here are some photos showcasing their creative and carefully measured designs! ✨
Athletics Training
Students have been gearing up for Athletics, just like getting ready to read! During a special training session with Coach Jim, they learned valuable skills, including baton changing for relay races. They practiced running at full speed while smoothly passing the baton to a teammate, ensuring a quick and efficient handover. With Athletics Day coming up next Friday, everyone is excited to put their new skills to the test!
Basketball Clinic Fun!
On Friday we had basketball clinic come over and teach us how to play basketball. We started with a game of octopus after we split in half boys with boys and girls. With girls we did some shooting in the hoop and then we did dribbling. Last we all played a game between students versus the basketball teachers from Melbourne United. It was fun!! - By Evelyn
